In my lab, we use a combination of analytical theory and computational techniques to understand the underlying physical phenomena in biological systems. With the evolution of modern experimental methods including single-molecule manipulation, physical forces are demonstrated to have a profound effect in many biological systems. The emerging realization of the significant influence of mechanics necessitates the study of the fundamental forces that govern the frequently unexpected behaviors that occur in these systems. Theoretical perspective on these physical forces serves as an important tool in understanding how biochemical and biophysical phenomena are exploited in concert by Nature.
