| WELCOME
We invite you to attend the Fourth IUFRO Meeting on Phytophthoras in Forests and Natural Ecosystems to be held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds near Monterey, California from August 26 - 31, 2007.
Since the mid-1990's, Phytophthora ramorum (the Sudden Oak Death pathogen) has impacted California redwood/tanoak and coastal evergreen forests. We will visit one of the hardest hit areas, the Big Sur area in Monterey County, and also view aerial infections of P. nemorosa and P. psuedosyringae.
The program will start with regional summaries to provide an overview of the major Phytophthora problems on different continents. The meeting will be organized around several major themes concerning Phytophthora in natural ecosystems:
- Biodiversity: species concepts and speciation, biogeography, evolution
- Host-pathogen interactions: infection processes, host responses, environmental interactions, disease expression
- Ecology-Epidemiology: population genetics, dispersal, spatial and temporal spread, dormancy, long-term survival, saprotrophic ability
- Ecological and Economic Impacts: spatial- stand to landscape, temporal- short term/long term, cascading effects- links to other ecological processes
- Disease Management: eradication, treatments, breeding for resistance, sanitation, monitoring, impact and spread, quarantine, training and communication
Invited plenary talks will set the stage for each of these themes followed by contributed oral and poster presentations. Abstracts (up to 1-page) of proposed papers or posters should be submitted via email to Dave Rizzo (dmrizzo@ucdavis.edu) by April 16, 2007.
Two half-day field trips will focus on the impacts, epidemiology and management of P. ramorum in the redwood/tanoak and mixed-evergreen (dominated by coast live oak) forests near Big Sur.
A meeting proceedings will be produced, deadlines and details will be provided in a future announcement. For authors with research results submitted to other journal outlets, we will accept extended abstracts instead of manuscripts.
Please check back for updated information. We look forward to welcoming you to California!
