LODGING
Most likely, you will have to book a room in the San Francisco Bay Area for the night of August 11th, while you should be able to book a flight out of Medford in the afternoon of August 19th. There are only a handful of hotels in Berkeley, but nearby San Francisco has a huge selection of hotels, motels and hostels.
In Berkeley, we are staying at the Clark Kerr Campus Conference Center. We travel to Mammoth Mountain Inn on August 14th, and will stop for one night at the Squaw Valley Plumpjack Inn on August 16th. For the nights of August 17 and 18, you will need to book your own room at the Red Lion Inn at Medford. Your reduced room rate at the Red Lion will extend for three nights after the conference ends.
PRE-CONFERENCE FIELD TRIP
If you are attending the pre-conference Sudden Oak Death field trip, meet in Union Square of Downtown San Francisco at 9:30am on August 11th, at the central column. You could taxi there or take BART and exit at the Powell Street Station; walk north two blocks along Powell or Stockton Streets. The field trip will provide beverages and lunch, and you will be returned to Union Square around 5:30pm.
GETTING TO CLARK KERR CAMPUS, BERKELEY
A taxi ride from San Francisco to Berkeley would be very expensive! Instead, San Francisco (both downtown and the airport) and Berkeley are linked by a rapid train system called BART. To reach the Clark Kerr campus on your own from San Francisco, take the Richmond line and disembark at the Downtown Berkeley station (all stations display system maps). Catch a short taxi ride, or take AC-Transit busline #51 (southbound) to the Unit 2 Residence Halls (College Avenue and Haste Street). BART fares will vary but expect to pay about $5; bus fare is $1.75 (exact change required).
We will pick up attendees at 11, 12, and 1 pm on the 12th at the Rockridge BART station on the Pittsburgh/Bay Point line, just let us know you will be using our complimentary service. Please note that if you depart SF on a train other than Pittsburgh/Bay Point, you must transfer at West Oakland station in order to arrive at Rockridge! Exit the station and wait for the van in the street-level parking lot.
Check-In at the conference site begins at noon, and the first session starts at 2pm.
OTHER TRAVEL
If you are traveling to Berkeley in your own car, directions to the Clark Kerr Campus can be found here, and parking advice can be found here. Please note that you will have to pay to park in a nearby University parking lot, because street parking is not available.
We depart Berkeley via deluxe motorcoaches on August 14th. Some days require long hours of travel. We are prepared for frequent field stops, and will provide attendees with plenty of beverages. Each coach has an on-board lavatory. If you are prone to motion sickness, please be prepared with medications.
DEPARTING FROM MEDFORD
Transportation is available to the Medford Airport after the conference has concluded in the early afternoon. If you are staying in Medford for an additional night, the hotel offers a complimentary shuttle service to the airport.
WEATHER AND APPAREL
Be prepared for a variety of weather! Summers in the Bay Area can often be quite cool, necessitating layered clothing. As we approach the eastern side of the Sierras, we are sure to experience intense heat and possibly strong winds, thundershowers and rainstorms. Oregon also should be quite hot and we may experience wet weather there also. We recommend you come prepared with a waterproof jacket and outdoor-ready shoes for field trips.
