My First Game

Well after a year, 2 months, 3 weeks, and 5 days, I finally made it to a Cal Football game. No, I'm not ashamed to admit that it's taken me this long and perhaps the wait made it all the sweeter! Last year, I never took advantage of the free first year transfer student season tickets. I guess that, in some respects, it was a bad decision considering how much fun I had at the game, but in others it was good since it took me a little while to acclimate to Berkeley. (A note for incoming Freshmen and Transfers: in case you didn't know, you get free season tickets during your first Fall Semester, but they are in short supply.) Having my first game be The Big Game was sweet! I had seen Memorial Stadium before from afar--from Gayley Rd. and Stadium Rim Way--but this was my first time inside its walls.

Given that I arrived late (I was in Sacramento that morning)--at about the end of the 1st quarter with Cal up 3-0--I wasn't able to see the field and stadium in "pristine" conditions before the game and as a result have no photos from then. It was gorgeous nonetheless. The field looked perfect and the backdrop of the hills and pine trees on the East (I sat on the West side) were spectacular. The fans were absolutely great; the atmosphere was perhaps the best part. I'm not much of a football fan, I'd only been to one game--a UM game at the Orange Bowl when I was in elementary school--prior to this one, but I do have to say that "in person" is way better than on TV. I was flipping through channels tonight and saw that they were replaying the game. I watched for a bit and it doesn't compare to being at the game. I don't know all the chants and all, but I tried with what I could. "GO BEARS!" was an easy one to handle though!

After a tight first half, Cal came back strong in the second. There was lots of scoring and, subsequently, lots of cheering! I lost my voice a bit after the game. When the game had about 3 minutes left, the fans started chanting, "We want the Axe!" Once the game was called (and we got the Axe!), irrespective of all the police and event guards/ushers/workers, the fans rushed the field!! I'd never seen that before and was ecstatic to be a part of it! It was a truly memorable game, but an even more memorable experience. The sights, the sounds, the thrill, the excitement--I'll never forget my first game. Even though I'm not too into football, I recommend that you at least go to one.

I had never seen the "tree" before, and it sure was lame (lol!). Oski > Tree
