Riding through the City

While many people (presumably) headed out to shop this weekend, my girlfriend Lindy and I took a trip of our own to where many of these shoppers would be: San Francisco. Not feeling compelled to shop, however, we replaced debit and credit cards for helmets and bicycles. We had been wanting to take this trip for a couple of weeks now and luckily had an opening this weekend. Additionally, much to our delight, we had clear skies today and after a solid week of cloudy/foggy days, the sun was much welcomed. We rode over to the North Berkeley BART station with our gear--Clif Bars, Water, Cameras, and Jackets--in tow and took the 25 minute ride into the city.

The Route: We got off at the Embarcadero station and rode over towards the Ferry Building. We took The Embarcadero all the way up past Fisherman's Wharf (too many tourists!) and the beach in front of Ghirardelli Square. We then rode through the park around Fort Mason and down towards Crissy Field. We finally rode toward the Golden Gate Bridge on Old Mason Road before heading back.

On the way back, we rode through North Beach down Columbus and then onto Montgomery through the Financial District before turning onto Market to go back down to BART.

Looking at the map, our trek "through" the city was way longer than we were expecting. Luckily, it was a lot more fun too! It was nice getting out and doing outdoor activities while enjoying the great weather the Bay Area has to offer.

Some older pics of BART (though we were at these stations today).

On the way out we made a pit stop at Crissy Field to eat our Clif Bars and enjoy the view. Here are our bikes posing for a shot. (We're lucky they didn't fall into the water!)

When we continued, we seem to have perturbed the gulls and pigeons. (You may have gathered, though, that it was planned as evidence from the following video. Sorry for the shakiness).

Another shot before heading back.

Riding down Columbus was GREAT! It was a bit nerve-racking riding alongside all the cars, vans, and busses, but they were surprisingly courteous. We stopped for a while at North Beach to grab a bite to eat at La Boulange de Columbus. We had the pleasure of eating at this cafe once before while my mom was out to visit so it was nice to return there. We had a combo plate--half soup & half open faced sandwich--and some great pastries! Lindy had the Hummus Sandwich and I had the Goat Cheese. For dessert, we shared a Seasonal Fruit Danish and a Lemon Turnover. (You have to try these!). Here's what we had.

The ride through the financial district was awesome. I really enjoy riding bike in traffic (lol!) in San Francisco, but only because the cars aren't zipping by! We were safe though, don't worry. You can see for yourself with this video.

I encourage all of you to take this (or a similar trip) through the city. Remember to post your trip!
