Society of American Foresters Convention

This week, I will be heading to Reno, Nevada, for the annual Society of American Foresters National Convention. 32 members of the UC Berkeley Forestry Club will represent our major and our school at the convention, which will be held at the Grand Sierra Hotel. The convention runs from Wednesday to Sunday, and features all sorts of speakers, tours, workshops, and networking events.

This is one of the major events for the Forestry Club, and we spend a lot of time preparing for it. We have a team set up for the Quiz Bowl, in which we will compete with teams from other schools to answer forestry-related questions. Usually we get slaughtered in this competition, but we'll see how this year goes. This is my first time attending this convention, or even attending any professional convention like this. The only conventions I've been to have been church conventions...

I, along with my friend Alex, received scholarships from SAF to attend. We were selected as Diversity Ambassadors from Berkeley. SAF pays for our hotel, registration fees, and transportation. I honestly was very surprised when I received the scholarship. I didn't expect to received it at all. It was a pretty humbling experience, to tell you the truth.

I'm taking off for Reno tomorrow. I probably won't be able to take pictures of the convention (my computer's acting strange and rejecting my camera's SD cards), but here are some pictures from 2006.
