What's wrong with my foot?!
So 2 weeks ago, a cyst the size of a corn kernel was discovered in one of the bones of my right foot. On top of that, the cyst was causing a stress fracture making it more difficult to walk. The podiatrist gave me a brace that looks like a ski boot to wear for 2-3 weeks. This boot has significantly made it more tolerable to walk but has also significantly slowed me down. Today's story is about how I got the boot in the first place.
The 2nd week into classes, I thought I sprained my right foot. The reason I thought this was because out of nowhere I started feeling the same pain that I felt when I sprained my left foot a year ago. The difference was that the first time I landed awkwardly and this time I was just walking.
So I began treating my right foot the same way I treated my left. Wore the same splints from last time, practiced RICE (Rest Ice Compress Elevate), thinking that it would be okay in a week. Well a week later it was actually feeling much worse. It was absolutely intolerable to walk on that foot. I had to use my brother's crutches. So I went in to see a nurse practitioner at 8am Monday morning.
**side note: I hate incompetent medical practitioners. I realize that there are always margins of error but the more incompetent doctors I meet, the more I lose my faith in the medical community**
Dr. #1 Told me that I either had plantar fasciitis or one of my legs was longer than the other and I was putting more weight on that foot as a result. She told me not to use the crutches or the brace and to walk it off. For some reason she even brought terrorism into the conversation but that's beside the point. I wanted to see an MD.
Dr. #2 Measured my legs and found that they were exactly even. Checked my spine for misalignment and found everything was fine. Said it couldn't possibly be plantar fasciitis...what?! Told me to walk it off despite the pain and prescribed me 600mg ibuprofen.
I wanted to see a podiatrist.
Dr. #3 Took an xray and found the cyst...YES!!!! Gave me the boot, had me go in for blood tests and a CAT scan. She tested me for autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupas and I was negative for both (phew...). Still waiting on the results of the CAT scan.
It's been 2 weeks now that I've had this brace and I can walk around the house and short distances but I can't walk on this foot without the brace for an extended period of time without feeling pain eventually. Definitely can't go hiking or even jogging.
I was trying to find out what the cyst means and apparently they're all benign, there is no known cause and if they find it potentially detrimental then they remove it. Otherwise, they leave it and hope nothing else happens as a result of its presence.
