Student News: Change to ADD-DROP deadline
TO: CNR Students and Faculty
FROM: Lynn Huntsinger, Assoc. Dean of Instruction and Student Affairs
SUBJECT: Change to ADD-DROP deadline, effective Fall 2005.
The College of Natural Resources is joining the other Colleges of the University of California, Berkeley, and moving the drop deadline and the add deadline for most courses to the end of the fifth week of the semester. For courses that are impacted and that are currently not managed by departments, the drop deadline only will be the end of the second week of the semester. The grading change option from a letter grade to a P/NP grade (and that direction only) will be moved from the end of the eighth week to the end of the tenth week of classes. These changes will begin in the fall semester of 2005.
Please keep in mind that our College had a fifth week add-drop deadline until 2003, but changed to match the other Colleges on campus to avoid confusion, and to eliminate the perception of an unfair situation when students taking the same classes have different deadlines for adding and dropping classes. These same reasons are a part of what leads us to return to the fifth week deadline in concert with the other Colleges on campus.
There are two other main goals behind the change: (1) to maximize the opportunity for students to take the courses on campus that are essential for their education and that have the highest demand; and (2) to increase the efficacy of education for all undergraduates by having courses settle down earlier in the term.

CNR Student Helps Keep Water Fresh in Uganda
CNR student David Dinh is helping rural Ugandans to have access to safe drinking water.
"In every home in Uganda, drinking water is traditionally stored in a clay pot and culturally, there is a tremendous preference for this method of water storage. Unfortunately, water stored through this method can become quickly contaminated from repeated hand contact," Dinh writes. Because of the need for safe water storage, Dinh has helped to create improved clay pots with plastic spigots. They are "an affordable, accessible, and culturally appropriate safe water storage approach for rural Ugandan communities, " says Dinh.

Forestry Student’s Senior Project Applies New Technology to Old Data
John Dingman’s three-ring binder for his senior honors project overflows with data ranging from topographic maps to digital elevation models to tree cores. Dingman, a senior forestry major at CNR, spent the summer of 2006 trekking through Mount Diablo State Park to collect firsthand data for his project on vegetation type mapping using GIS.

"Young Bear" Mayra Ceja honored for service to her community
Mayra Ceja, a senior environmental economics major, has had a busy four years at Cal.
As well as being a full time student, she has worked at the College of Natural Resources since her freshman year, founded the Phi Nu Xi Sorority, volunteered for CalSo and the “fresh faces†student blog, and spent ten to fifteen hours per week working to help under-served high school students get into college.

Undergrad Laura Lagomarsino maps ancestral relationships using genetics
Lagomarsino, third year in Plant Biology, is using nuclear and chloroplast genes to develop a phylogeny, or map of ancestral relationships between species of the genus Heliconia, a tropical plant. Her mentor, Assistant Professor Chelsea Specht in the department of Plant and Microbial Biology, uses molecular and evolutionary biology to understand lineages of related plants.
SPUR funding has allowed Specht to provide Lagomarsino with necessary laboratory materials to expand her research.
The SPUR program offers students a unique opportunity to develop as scientists with a level of independence that has often been reserved for graduate students. Not only does this help make Berkeley students more competitive, it develops of the kind of creative thinking skills so essential to the success of any scientist. “You learn all the techniques†says Lagomarsino, “But then you are also given a certain amount of freedom, and your thoughts are valued.â€

Undergrad Matt Stuckey uses DNA to understand butterfly evolution in the Sierra
Matthew Stuckey, fourth year in Environmental Economics and Policy and Conservation Resource Studies, is researching how the butterfly Colias behrii colonized the Sierra Nevada.
Through mentorship with Professor George Roderick and graduate student Sean Schoville, Stuckey has been working on cloning nuclear genes to assess genetic variation within and among populations of C. behrii.
Roderick’s team is using genetics to understand how organisms have colonized new areas. SPUR funds have helped provide chemicals and lab supplies necessary for molecular cloning – a technique essential for Stukey’s research.

Undergrad Subhajit Poddar researches genetics of green algae
Until he met the slimy green algae called Chlamydomonas, undergraduate Subhajit Poddar didn’t know he was interested in plant biology. “Once I began working with mutant strains of algae, I was totally hooked,†he says.
Poddar, fourth year in Plant and Microbial Biology, studies the green algae Chlamydomonas under the mentorship of Professor Krishna Niyogi. His research has focused on identifying and cloning genes responsible for two compounds involved in photosynthesis.
