King Fire Puts UC Research Forest to the Test

A key University of California, Berkeley, research station is threatened by the King Fire in El Dorado County. Blodgett Research Forest, 4,270 acres located 10 miles east of Georgetown, is home to scores of UC Berkeley investigations on trees and other plants, fish and wildlife populations, insects, diseases, soils, atmospheric chemistry and wildfire management techniques.

Biologists try to dig endangered pupfish out of its hole

BERKELEY — Scientists estimate that fewer than 100 Devils Hole pupfish remain in their Mojave Desert home, but a conservation biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, is giving important guidance in the efforts to rescue them by establishing a captive breeding program.

CRS Junior Wins World Food Prize Fellowship

Nicole Wong, a Conservation and Resource Studies major starting her junior year, completed a prestigious World Food Prize fellowship this summer at the U.S. Department of Agriculture ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center in Davis, California.

Climate Change Course Launches New Professional Education Program

Report checks health claims of popular sports, vitamin drinks

BERKELEY — A new report by UC Berkeley researchers questions the health claims of popular energy, sports, tea and fruit drinks on the market.

In a report released today (Wednesday, Aug. 6), the authors evaluated 21 popular drinks with health claims — from immune boosters to energy enhancers — on their labels and in their marketing materials.
