Position: GREEN VISION INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities

The San Francisco Bay Area is a great place to live, with spectacular landscapes surrounding attractive cities and towns. In the next few years, major decisions will be made about which of these landscapes get protected, and which do not.

The Green Vision Intern will help create a vision for open space around the region in the Bay Area -- everything from wildlife preserves to working farmlands, and eventually to urban parks.

Activities will include compiling and keeping a record of Bay Area open space maps, organizing county-by-county meetings with groups working to protect natural resources, and analyzing the information and maps that have been gathered.

Currently we are creating a map showing what lands are protected by city and county policies so we can focus our efforts on those that are most threatened.

The Green Vision Intern will work with the Policy Research Director and the Green Vision Task Force to create a vision for open space in the Bay Area. The Green Vision Intern will gather open space maps by contacting regional agencies, keep a record of open space maps and information available, make revisions to a draft open space map compiled from sub maps around the Bay Area, organize county-by-county meetings, and provide general assistance to Green Vision Task Force mapping efforts.

Commitment

This position requires a 2 to 3 day a week commitment for a period of 3 to 6 months. Work must be completed between 9 am and 5 pm. Work takes place in the Greenbelt Alliance main office in downtown San Francisco. This location is BART and MUNI accessible and public transportation is strongly encouraged. This position is unpaid.

Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have a strong interest and/or experience in regional open space planning. GIS skills are particularly valuable for this project but not absolutely required. Familiarity with open space protection laws or zoning terminology, acquired through a background in urban planning or development, would also be useful. Attention to detail and the ability to
establish organized systems to keep track of these details are important.

Experience in GIS mapping is a plus. Ideal candidates will be friendly and professional with strong organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and have an ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.

Position: INFILL TASK FORCE INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities

The Bay Area will add a million new residents by 2020. Where will these people live and work? Where will these homes and workplaces be built? What will this growth mean for the Bay Area¹s quality of life?

Greenbelt Alliance is working to channel this growth toward existing cities and towns, in a way that revitalizes existing downtowns and makes existing neighborhoods better places to live.

The Infill Task Force intern will support this effort by helping the Research and Field Departments field test a model showing where infill may occur. He or she will help coordinate case studies of a few cities to see whether the reality matches our model's predictions. We will then use the model to determine where policy changes are most needed to ensure that growth happens in cities, rather than by paving over farmlands and natural areas.

Commitment

This internship requires a commitment of two to three days/week, ideally Monday through Wednesday. Work must be completed between 9 am and 5 pm.

Qualifications

GIS skills are particularly valuable for this project but not absolutely required. Familiarity with open space protection laws or zoning terminology acquired through a background in urban planning or development would also be useful. Attention to detail and the ability to establish organized systems to keep track of details are important.

Position: GIS MAPPING INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities

Help protect open space and revitalize existing cities and towns by providing mapping assistance to a few ongoing research projects. Greenbelt Alliance is using map-based analysis to create a long-term strategy for our work.

What would a fully protected greenbelt look like? What cities and towns have high potential to add homes and jobs, so development doesn¹t happen out on the hills and farmland? Which parts of the greenbelt are already protected and which need protections?

Help us answer these questions, by building databases and maps we can use to record and analyze relevant information, create strategies, and communicate visually about these issues.

Commitment

This position requires a commitment of one to three days a week for three to six months.

Qualifications

The candidate for this position should possess basic GIS skills, an interest in city and county planning, and a good eye for detail.

To Apply

To apply for these opportunities, please send a resume and cover letter. You may apply for one or all of these opportunities with the same letter and resume. Please send application and inquiries to:
