Students in the BS@C Program seek to reduce the environmental impact of campus buildings and they accomplish this in many ways. The students administer a building occupant survey to ascertain the opinions and habits of building occupants in regards to sustainability. The students also perform lighting, waste, and water audits. Results from the audits and inhabitant survey guide the creation of a sustainability plan of action that identifies both long-term and short-term changes that can be made to decrease the building's environmental impact. Students then implement programs or design projects to reduce the environmental impact of campus buildings. All of the audits are done to Leadership in Energy and Environmental and Design for Existing Buildings (LEED EB) or campus standards. This program is two-pronged in that it reduces environmental impacts two ways: 1) through two service learning classes; and 2) by hiring student interns in buildings. The classes are run and the program is managed by students.

This program meshes the academic and the operational aspects of the university and is a unique collaboration of students, faculty, and staff. It uses the concept of service learning classes to focus thenvit university's academic acumen directly on the university's operations. It does this by starting the process of assessing buildings for green building certification and qualifying the buildings for several prerequisites and points. The sustainability plans of action generated for several campus buildings will also be presented and submitted to the new Sustainability Office, Capital Projects, Physical Plant- Campus Services and other relevant campus entities upon completion and will help guide future campus renovations and sustainability initiatives.
