These classes seem like a great opportunity to apply some of the things you learn in your classes. The first two are sponsored by The Building Sustainability at Cal (BS@C) Program and the last one is through the CalCAP Program. Check out the short descriptions and then click through for much more detailed ones.
ES 98/198 will focus on general sustainability programs (waste, water, transportation, etc.). Wednesdays from 3-5pm. Sign up now by contacting sustainabilityatcal@gmail.com.
ER 199 will focus on energy efficiency and conservation. Wednesdays from 3-5pm. Sign up now by contacting sustainabilityatcal@gmail.com.
ER 299 (CCN: 27541) will focus on campus-wide projects on Water Conservation, Computer Management, and Sustainable Investment. Mondays, 4-6pm in 225 Wheeler. Sign up now (http://schedule.berkeley.edu/)
Energy and Resources (ER) 199: Applications of Energy Efficiency and Conservation 1-3 units
*Can be applied to the ERG minor if taken for 3 units. This course serves as an introduction to using energy efficiency and conservation in real applications. Students will apply background academic knowledge of the energy sector to work on energy and climate problems at UC Berkeley.
You will:
* Use energy efficiency and conservation to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions on campus
* Learn how to conduct energy audits and analyze building energy consumption in workshops given by professionals
* Implement an energy plan for a campus building that includes educational programs and structural/operational changes
* Gain essential experience in project development and management
Environmental Sciences (ES) 98/198: Applications of Sustainability and Resource Management 1-3 Units
This class will provide a broad overview of sustainability topics, environmental education, and focus specifically on how these changes can be made through hands-on projects at Cal.
You will:
1. Consider the range of conservation measures used to reduce the environmental impact of campus buildings
2. Learn how to conduct waste and water audits
3. Use baseline data found by previous students to determine changes in a building
4. Work to implement projects (both infrastructural and educational)
5. At the end of the semester, students will present an analysis of their team's building and recommend future projects/changes for the building
Please contact Laura Moreno (sustainabilityatcal@gmail.com) if you are interested in taking either of the above courses (please specify which course you are interested in) or if you have any questions. Course control numbers will be sent out in mid-August.
Energy and Resources (ER) 299: CalCAP Sustainability Projects, 2-3 Units CCN: 27541
Help Cal meet its sustainability goals! UC Berkeley has committed to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2014. This second offering of the Climate Action Course will bring interested students together to conduct hi-priority projects to help UC Berkeley meet its sustainability goals. The class will be a mix of guest lectures, readings, and a group project. This semester's projects will focus on: Water Conservation, Computer Management, and Sustainable Investment. This course is sponsored by Dan Kammen and the Cal Climate Action Partnership (CalCAP - http://calcap.berkeley.edu).
Please contact Kelley Payne (kcpayne@berkeley.edu) or Karen Salvini (Karen_Salvini@mba.berkeley.edu) for more information.
