Civil Engineering 101
CE 101: Fluid Mechanics of Rivers, Streams, and Wetlands -- Civil And Environmental Engineering
TuTh 3:30-5:00pm, 406 DAVIS [3 units]
Prerequisites: Basic fluid mechanics, as demonstrated by CE100 or Mechanical Engineering 106 or consent of instructor.*

This course is designed to cover the physics pertaining to engineering efforts to preserve, harness, or restrain the natural processes found in aquatic environments, from mountain streams through rivers and reservoirs to estuarine wetlands, deltas, and the open ocean. We cover the basic fluid mechanics of: waves, mixing and transport of pollutants/nutrients, flow in engineered and natural channels, and sediment transport. The course intends to provide quantitative skills for describing the physical dynamics of these environments, acknowledging that a complete physical description is not yet possible.
Some topics in ecology and management are briefly discussed, as these often motivate engineers' work on these systems. Laboratory and field experiences are used to illustrate the concepts when practical.

*Given the different backgrounds of students in ESPM compared to CEE, I am willing to discuss with interested students a mechanism for waiving prerequisites. This would likely be accomplished by organizing those students into a study group that would read the very accessible introduction to basic fluid mechanics "Life in Moving Fluids" by Steven Vogel, which is shorter and more entertaining than a fluids textbook.
