An Unlikely Journey

by Sandra Deacon, SCA Web Team

“Camping? You’re kidding! Trail building? It looks like labor and I would never wear one of those hard hats.” These were the initial reactions by Danny Nguyen and his friends to an SCA recruiting presentation at their school. Intrigued by the prospect of adventure, Danny eventually joined SCA Oakland and “unexpectedly fell in love with nature and the outdoors.”

The son of Vietnamese immigrants, Danny grew up in Oakland where he says, “All I knew were cars, noise, streetlights, and skyscrapers. Rarely had I ever been exposed to camping, parks, or nature.”

When he describes his first outing with SCA, you can still hear the delight. “We went to Slide Ranch where there was a little beach, rocks, waves, and beautiful sunsets. We were just hanging out sitting in the grass enjoying the fresh air. It was so quiet and peaceful. After so much school work, it was great to get outdoors in such a beautiful place.“

Two other SCA assignments would follow the high school program.

“I spent a summer at Hopewell Furnace NHS in southeastern Pennsylvania, where I lived with seven strangers in the middle of the woods. It didn’t take us long to become a family after we built trails together by day and socialized at night! My experience in Pennsylvania was eye-opening, because the environment was the complete opposite from home; never in my life had I seen stars the way I did out there as the light pollution at home seemed to make it impossible.”

The best thing about all this? “Definitely the lifelong friendships that were forged between people with a similar interest to conserve and protect what they love; wildlife and the outdoors.”

XII Annual Microbiology Student Symposium

We are very pleased to announce the XII Annual Microbiology Student Symposium. The MSG symposium is scheduled for Saturday April 9th, 2011 in 101 Morgan Hall from 9am to 4pm. The program will include talks by students, poster presentations, and two keynote addresses. We are excited to announce that Dr. Peter Greenberg and Dr. Rafael Garduno from Canada will serve as our keynote speakers this year.

Registration is FREE and now available online at the MSG website . The symposium registration includes a catered lunch and coffee breaks. Please help us ensure the success of the symposium by registering as soon as possible and also checking our Facebook page

Deadline for abstract submission is March 11th. If you are a student (grad or undergrad) or you have promising student researchers in your lab, please consider submitting or encouraging them to submit an abstract for a talk or poster presentation. Abstract submission instructions are given on the MSG website after registration. There will be prizes for the best talk and poster presentations.

The XII MSG symposium is an excellent opportunity to interact with microbiology researchers from the entire region. Your attendance supports and enriches the student research occurring at UC Berkeley and other campuses. Last year, attendees included students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty from UC Davis, UC San Francisco, Stanford, twelve departments at UC Berkeley, The Joint Genome Institute, the US Department of Agriculture, and the Lawrence Livermore and Lawrence Berkeley National Labs. This year, we hope to break last year's attendance record as we look back on eleven years of successful student-run symposia!

Feel free to print the attached flyer and/or forward this email to anyone that would like to attend or participate in this year's event. My apologies if you have received multiple copies of this message due to overlap in some of our mailing lists. Feel free to email me directly with any questions you might have. On behalf of the UC Berkeley Microbiology Student Group, I look forward to seeing you at the symposium.
