I. Sustainable Peace' Photo Contest
In conjunction with UC Berkeley's Peace and Conflict Studies Department, I am pleased to announce the 'Sustainable Peace' Photo Contest. Photo Submission begins Friday, April 15th and ends at 11:59pm on Monday, May 2nd, 2011. You are invited to capture images that reflect sustainable peace, not simply within the realm of international development or in the social sciences but within your daily life and in a way that's relevant to you. Expressions of sustainability can be found from all departments and disciplines, from all backgrounds and locations. Tap into whatever expression fits your definition and help us build a global picture of sustainable peace!

Photo Criteria:
# This theme is broad and it's meant to be broad. Submit photos of family, friends, pets, landscapes, field work, something that struck you on your travels abroad or on your commute to class - something that captures an image or the essence of peace, as defined by you. Show us what YOU think sustainable peace looks like.
# File Format: Photos must be submitted in JPEG format only - for example, with a file name ending in ".jpg" or ".jpeg" or ".jpe" without the quotes. Photo file sizes should be between 4MB and under 6MB.
# Entry Format: Image can be captured with a digital or film camera, though photos will now be submitted digitally via an online submission process. Images that have been edited with software will also be accepted.
# Images taken before the opening submission date of April 15th will be accepted. Images taken between the submission dates of April 15th and May 2nd will also be accepted. No distinction between these dates will be made in the judging process.
# Photo submissions will begin April 15th and the deadline is May 2nd, 2011.
# Submissions are being accepted only from current UC Berkeley students - Cal Student Identification Number must be submitted along with the photograph.
# The submitted photograph must be the original work of a UC Berkeley student. Each student may submit up to 5 photographs.
# Winners will be chosen by a judging panel through the Peace and Conflict Studies department. Prizes will be given to the Grand Prize and 2nd place winners.
# Each photo should include a title and a small description that will act as a caption. The photo and the description should collectively explain how the image reflects sustainable peace.

How to Submit Digital Photos:
# All photographs must be emailed as an attachment to sustainablepeacephotocontest@gmail.com on or before Monday, May 2nd 2011.
# Each submission must include: Name, SID Number, Major Department and Anticipated Graduation Year. The date that the photograph was taken, as well as the location, should be included.

Photo Contest Terms and Conditions:
# All photos entered in the contest should adhere to cultural ethics of sensitivity. If recognizable people are portrayed, the photographer must have received permission from the subjects to have the photograph taken.
# Please keep in mind that all photographs, once submitted, may be used by the UC Berkeley Peace and Conflict Studies Department as they see fit. By submitting a photo, you will be agreeing to having your photo uploaded on an external website. You will still retain the right to publish your work in other media and to further transfer rights to this work to other parties. Please direct any questions to sustainablepeacephotocontest@gmail.com.

III. $30 Cheeseboard Giftcard - Earth Week Giveaway!
To celebrate our lovely planet (and to help keep it lovely) The Exchange, exchange.berkeley.edu, is having a special promotion. Anyone who posts an item on the website will be entered in a raffle to win $30 to Cheeseboard! This opportunity lasts only through Earth Week, meaning it ends Friday, April 22, so make sure you post an item before then to be eligible for the raffle.

The Exchange is like a craigslist, but BETTER! Because it is limited to users who have a berkeley.edu email address, it is a safer community to give and take items. Also, everything posted is for FREE and includes furniture, office supplies, clothes etc.! Be sustainable and reuse before you buy new.

The rules are simple and the prize is fabulous. There is no better way to enjoy our Earth than to eat some delicious pizza while soaking up the beautiful spring sunshine. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=198774313494278

IV. Brower Youth Award
Hard to believe, but time is counting down for the 12th Annual Brower Youth Award application deadline! All applications must be submitted by May 16, 2011 9:00 pm PST. That means, you've got a little under four weeks to put together a winning application to net a $3,000 cash prize, an all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco to speak at an inspirational award ceremony, media coverage and year-round support.

Are YOU an eco-activist between 13-22? Do you know an eco-activist? If so, get moving on that application! Tell us how you've helped build the green movement, in your city, your state, or your nation. Your application not only gets you in the running for the award, but can open up other doors. In past years, we've helped top applicants get featured in books (like Girls Gone Green and Green My Parents) and on TV (like the Sundance Channel), as well as invites to speak at celebrated activist gatherings.

Our applications are now completely online. Visit www.thebyas.org to proceed with application. We're here to answer questions and help you present your story. If you've got any questions, email bya@earthisland.org or call Anisha Desai at 510-859-9144. And, if you know of an exceptional youth eco-activist, ages 13-22, please let them know about the awards and visit www.broweryouthawards.org/apply for more information!

FYI: The Brower Youth Awards team is hosting a bi-monthly webinar to familiarize applicants with the Brower Youth Awards and to also ensure that they are submitting the best application possible! We are holding webinars on the following dates & times:
Wednesday April 27, 2011 @ 1:00PM PST
Wednesday May 4, 2011 @ 4:00PM PST
Wednesday May 11, 2011 @ 1:00pm PST
