Spring/Summer 2012 | Intern with the SCA
SCA, the Student Conservation Association (http://www.thesca.org/serve/internships) is the nation's oldest and largest provider of conservation internships, offering nearly 2000 expense paid opportunities each year. Internships last from 12 weeks to 12 months, start at all times throughout the year, and are found all across the country. Interns have the opportunity to work with such agencies at the National Park Service, National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and other state and local agencies. Interns do not need to be in school or be a certain major; all ages, majors and skill sets are eligible to apply.

SCA also offers field leader opportunities, overseeing groups of high school students or college aged students doing hand-on conservation projects. Leaders must be over 21, have outdoor leadership experience, and experience working with youth: http://www.thesca.org/serve/field-leaders/programs.

Summer 2012 | Earn $4000-$6000 this summer working for social change
California Fair Share is a citizen-based non-profit advocacy organization that works to provide every Californian with a fair shot at a good job, a secure future and a strong voice in our democracy. We’re facing a huge jobs crisis in this country. While too many Americans are struggling to find work, big corporations like Exxon Mobil are receiving billions in government subsidies. Instead of giving money to corporations that don’t need it, we can create jobs rebuilding America’s roads and bridges, and expanding clean energy. Big companies like Exxon will spend millions lobbying to stop us, but with elections coming up, grassroots support can make the difference.

We are NOW HIRING for our office in the Sacramento area to work on the campaign. We're looking for people who work hard, communicate well, and are committed to positive social change. Hours are 1:45pm - 10:00pm, Monday through Friday. The heart of the job is canvassing neighborhoods; staff also participate in campaign workshops on coalition building, media outreach, and grassroots organizing tactics. We offer top candidates the position of Field Manager in Training.

Fair Share Alliance is opening offices in 10 states across the country--it is also possible to apply and interview in Sacramento for a position in a different state office. For more information, visit https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEt1UHMzMUZfOHYtb3MxX1hxVnl0eVE6MA#gid=0.

Spring/Summer/Fall 2012 | Utilize your GIS skills at Ruch Logic in Berkeley, California

Ruch Logic, LLC is a Berkeley, California-based scientific consulting business headquartered in the Wells Fargo Building in Downtown Berkeley. Led by energetic multidisciplinary-capable scientist Scott Ruch, Ruch Logic specializes in mapping and monitoring complex underwater ecological landscapes of the shallow water habitats in Northern California waters through the use of cutting-edge, GIS-based differential mapping technologies.
Ruch Logic is currently seeking qualified candidates for part-time, student intern boat-based data collection and GIS lab-based data processing positions for Spring/Summer/Fall 2012. Qualified applicants should be engaged in the fields of and relating to GIS (Geographic Information Science) and RS (Remote Sensing) with keen interests in Applied Biology and Ecology, Environmental Science, or Geography.

Under the guidance of an experienced, boat-trained Ruch Logic Scientist, internship will consist of sampling submerged aquatic vegetation from a 24-foot research vessel in the tidal waters of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (SSJD). Qualified candidates require physical capability to endure 10-hour days in successive SSJD summer heat, strength to lift 50-pound sampling devices, and steady internal gyroscope to maintain focus and concentration in wind and tidal exchange driven swell. Experience on boats and water-based activity (swimming, diving, fishing, etc.) is desired in addition to schedule flexibility. Data collection timeframes are based on the tides and as a result, are constantly shifting from week-to-week. Similar to the guidance offered to Ruch Logic, LLC interns on the water, successful candidates will be under-the-wings of capable Ruch Logic Scientists in the Berkeley Computer Laboratory. Duties will include basic data processing of digital hydroacoustic plant data, underwater video, and inventorying physical plant sample information. Experience with introductory GIS/RS (ESRI ArcGIS platform) and basic computing know-how (MS Office Suite, etc.) are necessary for success in this position.  Office-based activities will take place at the Ruch Logic, LLC headquarters in Berkeley.

Interested students should e-mail their cover letter and resume to Scott Ruch at ruchlogic@gmail.com. Ruch Logic, LLC is an equal employment opportunity employer and provides a forum for motivated, highly-focused California public university students to gain real-world experience working on a system that is vital to the peoples and cultures of the State of California.
