Apply Now | Forest Ecology Research Assistant, Summer 2013

The Forest Community Ecology Group/Battles Lab at UC Berkeley is seeking two full time field research assistants (RAs) for ecology projects in the Sierra Nevada, summer 2013. The RAs will work with our group to study forest processes in projects located at UC Blodgett Forest Research Station, Baker Forest, Sierra National Forest, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The RAs will be trained in forest measurement methods, data management, tree ring sampling, and other field skills. For Cal students, involvement in these projects can provide opportunities to carry out independent research and/or continued work during the school year.

March 25 | Toxic Chemicals Research Assistant

As You Sow is seeking a Toxic Chemicals Research Assistant to work closely with the Director of Toxic Chemicals Research in conducting extensive scientific research on the various Prop65 chemicals and related manufacturing processes of personal consumer products, evaluate the use of these compounds, and review company procedures including MSDS sheets. It is critical that candidates understand chemical structures and interactions, materials use, and can translate this information to identify target products.

The ideal candidate will be an independent self-starter who is comfortable researching scientific and technical information, setting benchmarks, and asking questions. Attention to deadlines and milestones for research projects and the ability to communicate about progress are essential. The candidate will have extensive research experience with a keen attention to detail and be comfortable citing all references and sources of information.

April 1 | Education Outside Corps Member

Background:
In 2011 Education Outside, in partnership with San Francisco Unified School District launched the Corps for Education Outside—the first service corps program in the United States dedicated to transforming urban public schools into centers of 21st century experiential learning, environmental sustainability, and innovation. The Corps program is designed to harness the enthusiasm and passion of college graduates who serve as the point people for outdoor experiential education and school greening activities at their school sites. Corps members play a central role in sparking students’ interest in science, building a more eco- and food-literate student population, increasing the energy efficiency of their schools’ infrastructure, decreasing schools’ waste streams, building strong school communities, and promoting outdoor education opportunities.

The Program: Are you creative, energetic and interested in working on climate change and sustainability? Are you a college or graduate student interested in a summer internship? If so,the San Mateo County Manager's Office would like to hear from you. We're looking for a summer intern to market energy efficiency programs to residents and property owners, as well as assist in updating our Environmental Purchasing Policy.Other projects may include helping the County identify new ways to conserve resources and promoting bike sharing, car sharing and flex/telework programs to our employees.

Ideal Candidate:

- Strong interest in sustainability and environmental issues
- Applicants currently in the process of earning an undergraduate or graduate degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Public Policy, Environmental Science or a related field; recent graduates welcome to apply
- Excellent interpersonal skills – will be able to conduct outreach and marketing
- Effective written and oral communication
- Strong analytical skills – familiar with conducting research and data analysis
- Able to work independently with direction from supervisor
- Interest in learning more about a career in local government

Salary and Hours: The internship runs 8‐12 weeks;schedule can be full or part‐time and start dates are flexible. Compensation for this internship will be $12.00 per hour.
