This is a great event for all past, present and future Peace Corps Volunteers (plus family and friends, too) as we will also be celebrating those preparing to depart for Peace Corps assignments overseas!!

May 1 | Public Morals, Science, and International Trade: Animal Welfare and the WTO

Christoph Hermes, Visiting Fellow from the EU Commission
Wednesday, May 1, 2013
223 Moses Hall, 12-1:30 p.m.

Many citizens care about the humane treatment of animals. This has led the European Union, the United States and others to enact a variety of animal welfare laws. Examples range from the US Animal Welfare Act to the recent European ban on seal products. At the same time, the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) impose certain limits on trade restrictions. Is there a conflict between animal welfare laws and the WTO? Christoph Hermes is a lawyer at the European Commission in Brussels and has represented the European Union in numerous disputes in front of the WTO. He will present the relevant WTO rules and explore to what extent they leave countries regulatory space to enact animal welfare measures.

Sponsored by the Center for Institutions and Governance and the Institute of International Studies.

Date: Saturday, May 4, 2013
Time: 8:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m.

Join your fellow seniors and young alumni on Cinco de Mayo Eve (May 4) to celebrate your upcoming alumnihood! The East Bay’s #1 rated taco truck, Tacos Sinaloa, will be parked on the Alumni House patio to serve their authentic tacos (carne asada, chicken, carnitas, al pastor, and veggie). We’ll keep the margaritas flowing and the music bumping.

Graduating Seniors: This is your last hurrah before finals and graduation! Your young alumni friends will be on hand to welcome you into the young alumni community.

Young Alumni: This is your chance to welcome your younger friends into the Cal Alumni family!

This event is open to graduating seniors from the class 2013 (December 2012 grads, too!) and young alumni from the classes of 2000–2012. Price includes five tacos and one margarita. Additional taco and drink tickets can be purchased on-site. ID required for alcoholic beverages. Dress to impress!
