SEEKING: Student Interns interested in environmental innovation in the City San José (City). Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, and students with course work or experience in environmental studies, communications, urban planning or related fields are encouraged to apply. We are looking for candidates with:
•Proficiency with applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publishing •Strong research, analysis, and writing skills
•Ability to create work products through independent work as well as team collaboration

PROJECTS: The intern will be a part of the Environmental Services Department program that assists with efforts to divert waste from landfills. The main project will consist of helping department staff implement a grant from the Urban Sustainability Directors Network to research and develop an educational outreach took kit regarding the management of compostable plastics. Detailed knowledge of compostable plastics is not essential.
Other projects may include assisting with design and implementation of industry conferences and exhibit halls; assisting with the implementation of professional training for sustainable landscaping.SALARY: San Jose pays interns per the City's graduate/undergraduate pay schedule, from $13.50- $15.50 hr.

Description: From June through July, the undergraduate will assist in data collection through avian point count surveys, in the White Mountains and Owens Valley of California. Surveys will be performed at locations where historical surveys were done by Joseph Grinnell and colleagues at the MVZ in the region from 1916 through 1954; and represent a subset of sites of the Western Desert transects which will be performed in upcoming years.

Experience with auditory-visual identification of birds is preferred, but not required, as assistants will be trained in identification and point count sampling methods. Assistant should be capable of hiking 10 kilometers per day at high elevations, comfortable camping for several days at a time, and should provide their own camping equipment. A summer stipend is available.

The Campus Physical Plant is looking for an interested student in the field of Sustainability to participate in Utility Engineering initiated water conservation projects. Interested candidate will assist engineers, program managers and personnel in field to survey, document, prepare report and assist in implementation of several water conservation projects in campus buildings. Interested candidate is also responsible for field verification of implemented projects and communicating this information within Physical Plant and Campus Community.

Requirements:
Undergraduate or graduate student currently enrolled at UC Berkeley

Skills and Abilities required:
Excellent writing, speaking, computer and web skills.
Ability to work independently
Self-starter
Background or previous work or study in environmental
Interest in sustainability and resource preferred.
Proficient in xcel, word, database, power point and web uploading.
Other duties as required.
