Seeking UC undergrads and graduate students to tutor students in the following UC Berkeley-equivalent classes for Spring 2014 semester

CHEM 1A, CHEM 1B*, CHEM 3A/B (Organic)*, BIO 1A*, BIO 1B, MATH 1A/B (Calculus)*, MATH 53 & 54, PHYS 7A&B* (*high need)

Summary/Background

Tutors will be key staff of the UCB National Institutes of Health (NIH) Bridges to Baccalaureate (B2B) Program. The program’s goal is to increase the number of individuals from African American, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander backgrounds in the country’s biomedical science fields. Tutors will work with community college students who are preparing to be competitive transfer applicants to the University of California and other 4-year colleges.

Job Responsibilities:
Tutors will prepare students to possess the tools, strategies, and knowledge to help them proceed to the next stage of the program, lab research with Berkeley professors, and transferring. Typical weekly tutoring sessions include review of the week’s time management/study skills progress, teaching/reviewing a portion of the key topics learned that week, and/or quizzes the tutor has created.

Nov 2 | Research Analyst (GIS), CalRecycle

The Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) is seeking a Research Analyst (GIS) to work within the Knowledge Integration Section of the Policy Development & Analysis Office. The incumbent will: gather, compile, analyze and interpret spatial data in CalRecycle’s Geographic Information System (GIS); use online and other resources to confirm the locations of facilities, businesses, and other CalRecycle stakeholders; maintain a spatial inventory of facilities for use in projects from throughout CalRecycle; perform spatial analysis to ensure all datasets are accurate and suitable for use; monitor daily GIS processes, run quality assurance queries, correct data inconsistencies and anomalies, and ensure the smooth functioning of spatial queries, facilitate the transmission of query answers to external databases and the successful operation of CalRecycle GIS functions; perform research, statistical studies and geospatial analyses; support policy initiatives, respond to data requests, provide meaningful information related to complex waste-related activities, and support special studies with relevant and meaningful maps, charts, tables, and other output resulting from spatial analysis; and perform Global Positioning System (GPS) location verifications for CalRecycle sites of interest. The Office location is in the heart of downtown, close to restaurants, shops, farmers markets, and city parking.
