The Alaska Region of the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service will be hiring numerous temporary/seasonal Biological Science Technicians for the 2010 field season to work on a variety of fisheries-related studies.

Appointments will extend from three to six months, and will be filled at the GS- 4-7 level ($~14.30/hr.-$~19.80/hr., includes a 23-25% cost of living allowance). Projects involve monitoring salmon runs using fish weirs, digital video equipment, and sonar; conducting abundance estimates of resident fish species; documenting fish movement using radio telemetry; sampling water quality; and performing fish habitat inventories. Technicians will perform field work at various locations throughout the state, including remote areas in the Alaskan bush. Travel to field camps is primarily by small aircraft or boat. Please note that these positions are for the adventurous as harsh weather, an abundance of biting insects, and remote living conditions can be challenging. However, this rare opportunity to work with intact assemblages of native fish species, while surrounded by abundant wildlife and pristine wilderness, will more than compensate the tolerant individual.

Bob Epstein
Co-Founder, Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2)
Trustee, Natural Resources Defense Council

Where: Room 355 at Goldman School of Public Policy

Lunch will be served. RSVP to this email by Mon. Nov. 30th to ensure sufficient food.

About the Seminar:
Bob will discuss the increasing role that independent business voices have played in advancing environmental policy. He will draw from his experience in California with the 2002 Clean Cars Bill, the 2006 California Global Warming Solutions Act and the current activities in passing a comprehensive climate policy in Congress.

About the Speaker:
Bob holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science, specializing in distributed database systems (with a minor in music). His early career was focused on the commercialization of databases and networking. From 1976 - 1979 he was the manager of the INGRES project at the University of California at Berkeley. From 1979 – 1984 Bob was vice president of development and principal architect for Britton-Lee, a developer of database machines. In 1984 he was a leading architect and proponent for client/server computing with the creation of Sybase and the development of SQL Server which eventually grew into a billion dollar business with the inclusion of middleware and development tools.

Bob has worked on mobile and “wearable” computers and new businesses enabled by the Internet. In 1996, he co-founded Colorado Microdisplay that produced industry-leading micro-displays for entertainment and mobile computing. In 2000, Bob co-founded GetActive Software and served as the Chairman of the Board. Most recently, Bob was one of the organizers of New Resource Bank – a California chartered bank specializing in financial products for green businesses and consumers. Bob is also a Director at Cleantech Capital Group and investor in Michelle Kaufmann Designs.

Bob is a trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council, the leading U.S. environmental organization. In June of 2000, he co-founded Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2) with Nicole Lederer. E2 is a national community of professionals and business people who believe in protecting the environment while building economic prosperity. It serves as a champion on the economic side of good environmental policy by taking a reasoned, economically sound approach to environmental issues. Through active support of Natural Resources Defense Council, E2 works to influence state and national environmental policy.

About CEPP:
The Center for Environmental Public Policy (CEPP) at the Goldman School of Public Policy (GSPP) aims to bridge the gap between environmental theory and policy implementation through seminars, workshops and conferences. CEPP's programs are intended to educate, direct and motivate those working in the field of environmental public policy. In particular, CEPP activities are geared to help fill the local and global need for competent environmental managers who are adept at policy-making within the context of limited and varying resources.

ASUC Undergraduate/Graduate Mentorship Program Deadline - December 4
The ASUC Undergraduate/Graduate Mentorship Program provides an opportunity for undergraduates to obtain individualized guidance from a graduate student. The graduate student will be a mentor who will offer advice and answers to the undergraduate who is interested in gaining more knowledge about his/her academic field of interest, the graduate school process, or just about future academic goals.

Participants will be expected to enroll in and attend a weekly one and half hour one-unit (Tuesdays 7-8:30pm) DeCal during the spring semester. The class will include guest speakers and panelists directed towards providing undergraduates with information about graduate school. Numerous socials throughout the course will allow for reflection on workshops from previous weeks. The ASUC will provide the structures and materials for this program, but it is up to you as the participant to make the most of the mentorship. How much you benefit from the program is highly dependent on the effort given. YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN THE DECAL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM.

This is a great chance for undergraduate students to take advantage of the wisdom and experiences of their graduate mentors. Not only will the undergraduates learn about the graduate process, but they will also establish relationships with their mentors, bringing students with similar interests together. It is the ASUC’s hope for the program to enhance the Cal student community’s academic potential, to join the gap between undergraduate and graduate education, and to continue the academic success of this university.

The application form is accessible here:
Please email the completed form to ugmpsp10@gmail.com or drop it off at the ASUC Academic Affairs Vice President’s Office on the 2nd Floor of Eshleman by Friday December 4, 2009. You will be contacted as soon as your application is received and processed.
Environment and Community Master's Program Accepting Applications
We are pleased to announce that we are currently accepting applications for Fall 2010 admission to our interdisciplinary Master of Arts in Social Science Environment and Community Program. Attached is a brochure that describes some of the program’s unique elements. The application deadline for Fall 2010 admission is March 1, 2010.

This is an exciting time to consider applying to the Environment and Community Program. Not only are the program’s core themes as relevant as ever, but we have recently shifted from a two-year to an annual admission cycle. As a result, beginning in Fall 2008, the number of graduate students in the program substantially increased. This increase has enabled us to develop and offer new graduate seminars and expand the research methods component of the program. We have also identified three key thematic areas to organize the program’s expanding repertoire of core graduate seminars. These are 1) Economic and Political Dimensions, 2) Socio-Cultural Dimensions: Race, Class, Gender and Place, and 3) Ecological Dimensions. Please explore our website http://www.humboldt.edu/envcomm for more information.

The chosen undergraduates taking part in this ten-week program will receive hands-on nanoscience and technology experience through research with applications to bio-engineering, chemistry, electronics, materials science, optics, optoelectronics, physics, and the life sciences. The research projects are designed and supervised by the faculty and technical staff at the participating NNIN research facilities. Interns work with faculty and graduate students on projects using the unique resources offered at their award site.
Find information on the NNIN sites at http://www.nnin.org/ or http://www.nnin.org/nnin_sitedescriptions.html

A scientific convocation, attended by all NNIN REU interns, is held in August to allow interns the opportunity to present their work to their peers in a concise scientific presentation. Interns also must complete a written report, akin to a research paper, summarizing the findings of their research project. These reports are published as the NNIN REU Research Accomplishments and distributed to the interns and sites, The National Science Foundation (NSF) and many others.

Participants receive a $4,000 stipend, plus housing and all travel expenses to their research site and the convocation site. They may be responsible for their own meals. Full participation in the site program, network convocation and reporting is mandatory.

Restrictions and Eligibility Requirements for NNIN REU Interns:

1] If you have already participated in an NNUN or NNIN REU Program, you are NOT eligible to participate again.

2] Undergraduate student interns must be citizens of the United States of America or its possessions OR, if citizens of another country, must be permanent residents of the United States. If you are a permanent resident, a copy of your green card is required as part of your application.

3] An undergraduate student is a student who is enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree. Students who are transferring from one college or university to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate.

Students who have already received a 4-year college degree of any kind or will receive their degree before the end of the program in August 2010 ARE NOT eligible to participate.

4] Liability and the use of hazardous materials in research demands that our interns be 18 years of age or older.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Along with your completed four-page application, we require the following materials RECEIVED BY Wednesday, February 17th, 2010:

1. Your Current Official College Transcript(s). Request that your college(s) mail an official transcript to Ms. Melanie-Claire Mallison directly and make your request early--transcripts can take quite awhile to arrive. Frosh: Feel free to send a high school transcript also, as back up to your college transcript. However, even if your college transcript has no grades on it yet, we MUST have your official college transcript.

2. A Personal Essay. Your personal essay is critical to the selection process. It is through your words that we ascertain your 'fit' with our program. Please submit a well-written essay, 1-2 pages long, in which you discuss the relationship between your present studies and a career in engineering or scientific research. As preparation, you may wish to discuss your career interests with one or more professors, and include any insights you gain from these discussions, and any other sources, which explain how this program might help you prepare for your future. Note any honors and awards that you have received that are relevant, as well as any prior research experience and / or any research field you are most interested in. If you do not believe your grades reflect your potential, please explain them in this essay. You may also send your resume, but a resume is not a substitute for the essay!

3. A Letter of Recommendation from a member of faculty who knows you well and can comment with authority on your research potential. OR If you can identify a person better qualified to evaluate your abilities, i.e., a graduate student TA, a co-op adviser or industry mentor, please feel free to have that person write your recommendation. Recommendations can be submitted online, following the instructions on the appropriate web page or they can be mailed to Ms. Mallison, to arrive no later than Wednesday, February 17th, 2010. E-mailed recommendations are unacceptable, but last minute letters can be faxed to 607-255-8601. Be sure the fax is followed up with the original recommendation. More than one recommendation is acceptable but not necessary.

4. If you are a citizen of another country AND a permanent resident of the USA, you MUST include a copy of your Green Card (both sides) in your application materials. You may snail mail the copy or email it to Ms. Mallison as a PDF attachment.

(If you are a citizen of another country and you ARE NOT a permanent resident, you are not eligible for our program!)

Do not include your social security number on any document. It is illegal for us to distribute your SS#!

APPLICATION NOTES
* While you will receive several automatic emails when you apply online, you will also receive personal emails from Ms. Mallison when your application arrives, and when it is complete. If you do NOT hear from Ms. Mallison, she has not received your application!

* USPS express mailed originals are greatly preferred, but last minute components can be faxed to 607-255-8601. FedEx is very expensive and should be avoided!

* The online application can be found at http://www.reu.nnin.org/

MAIL ALL APPLICATION COMPONENTS TO:

    Ms. Melanie-Claire Mallison
NNIN REU Program Assistant
250 Duffield Hall, CNF
Cornell University, Ithaca NY 14853-2700
