Spring/Summer 2012 | Intern with the SCA
SCA, the Student Conservation Association (http://www.thesca.org/serve/internships) is the nation's oldest and largest provider of conservation internships, offering nearly 2000 expense paid opportunities each year. Internships last from 12 weeks to 12 months, start at all times throughout the year, and are found all across the country. Interns have the opportunity to work with such agencies at the National Park Service, National Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, and other state and local agencies. Interns do not need to be in school or be a certain major; all ages, majors and skill sets are eligible to apply.

SCA also offers field leader opportunities, overseeing groups of high school students or college aged students doing hand-on conservation projects. Leaders must be over 21, have outdoor leadership experience, and experience working with youth: http://www.thesca.org/serve/field-leaders/programs.

Summer 2012 | Earn $4000-$6000 this summer working for social change
California Fair Share is a citizen-based non-profit advocacy organization that works to provide every Californian with a fair shot at a good job, a secure future and a strong voice in our democracy. We’re facing a huge jobs crisis in this country. While too many Americans are struggling to find work, big corporations like Exxon Mobil are receiving billions in government subsidies. Instead of giving money to corporations that don’t need it, we can create jobs rebuilding America’s roads and bridges, and expanding clean energy. Big companies like Exxon will spend millions lobbying to stop us, but with elections coming up, grassroots support can make the difference.

We are NOW HIRING for our office in the Sacramento area to work on the campaign. We're looking for people who work hard, communicate well, and are committed to positive social change. Hours are 1:45pm - 10:00pm, Monday through Friday. The heart of the job is canvassing neighborhoods; staff also participate in campaign workshops on coalition building, media outreach, and grassroots organizing tactics. We offer top candidates the position of Field Manager in Training.

Fair Share Alliance is opening offices in 10 states across the country--it is also possible to apply and interview in Sacramento for a position in a different state office. Spring/Summer/Fall 2012 | Utilize your GIS skills at Ruch Logic in Berkeley, California
Ruch Logic, LLC is a Berkeley, California-based scientific consulting business headquartered in the Wells Fargo Building in Downtown Berkeley. Led by energetic multidisciplinary-capable scientist Scott Ruch, Ruch Logic specializes in mapping and monitoring complex underwater ecological landscapes of the shallow water habitats in Northern California waters through the use of cutting-edge, GIS-based differential mapping technologies.
Ruch Logic is currently seeking qualified candidates for part-time, student intern boat-based data collection and GIS lab-based data processing positions for Spring/Summer/Fall 2012. Qualified applicants should be engaged in the fields of and relating to GIS (Geographic Information Science) and RS (Remote Sensing) with keen interests in Applied Biology and Ecology, Environmental Science, or Geography.

Under the guidance of an experienced, boat-trained Ruch Logic Scientist, internship will consist of sampling submerged aquatic vegetation from a 24-foot research vessel in the tidal waters of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (SSJD). Qualified candidates require physical capability to endure 10-hour days in successive SSJD summer heat, strength to lift 50-pound sampling devices, and steady internal gyroscope to maintain focus and concentration in wind and tidal exchange driven swell. Experience on boats and water-based activity (swimming, diving, fishing, etc.) is desired in addition to schedule flexibility. Data collection timeframes are based on the tides and as a result, are constantly shifting from week-to-week. Similar to the guidance offered to Ruch Logic, LLC interns on the water, successful candidates will be under-the-wings of capable Ruch Logic Scientists in the Berkeley Computer Laboratory. Duties will include basic data processing of digital hydroacoustic plant data, underwater video, and inventorying physical plant sample information. Experience with introductory GIS/RS (ESRI ArcGIS platform) and basic computing know-how (MS Office Suite, etc.) are necessary for success in this position. Office-based activities will take place at the Ruch Logic, LLC headquarters in Berkeley.

Interested students should e-mail their cover letter and resume to Scott Ruch at ruchlogic@gmail.com. Ruch Logic, LLC is an equal employment opportunity employer and provides a forum for motivated, highly-focused California public university students to gain real-world experience working on a system that is vital to the peoples and cultures of the State of California.

Mar. 20 | Work on campus this summer with the SLC
The Student Learning Center is currently looking to hire talented undergraduates, graduates and teaching professionals for our Summer Programs: Summer Bridge, Summer Sessions, and the SPEAR Middle School Academy. Job announcements and application instructions can be found on our website at: http://slc.berkeley.edu/general/SLCsummerjobs.htm.

We have scheduled an Informational Sessions to describe our Summer programs and answer questions about the academic positions available with the SLC this summer: Tuesday, March 20th | 3:30-5pm | 201B Chavez Student Center

Mar. 30 | Team up with OurEarth.org this summer
This summer join the OurEarth.org community and become an intern in OurEarth.org's 2012 Environmental Leadership Program. This is a rare opportunity for you to develop as a leader and learn many of the skills that are necessary if you want to create significant environmental changes in the future. In addition to leadership training, you will also create and develop your own environmental project, be in a team with students from other colleges, and help OurEarth.org promote the new features that will be deployed on its website in June. Because OurEarth.org is still a young organization this is an opportunity to join on the ground floor of many up-and-coming initiatives. Lastly, for added flexibility, all work is done remotely so you can work from your home, campus, or anywhere else, yet you will still have very frequent contact with the OurEarth.org management and other interns via conference calls, email, webinars, and other electronic mediums.

OurEarth.org is a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization and grassroots initiative that aims to aid and develop environmental leaders, in part, by transforming the way environmental programs, activities, and information are found on the internet. A more detailed program description, the internship application, and further information about the OurEarth.org organization is available here: http://www.ourearth.org/students/. Finally, this unpaid internship program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Application deadline is March 30, however students are admitted on a rolling basis, so act quickly if you are interested. If you have any questions, please contact John Ullman at (410) 878-6485 or john@ourearth.org, to get additional information.

Mar. 31 | Resolve environmental conflicts with the EPA this summer
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Conflict Prevention and Resolution Center (CPRC) seeks a student intern interested in environmental conflict resolution. CPRC houses EPA's experts in environmental collaboration and conflict resolution and provides a range of services to EPA managers and staff, including access to professional mediators and facilitators, case intake and consultation, process design, conflict coaching, and training. Applicants are asked to submit a resume and cover letter to indicate interest. Possible Summer 2012 projects include legal and programmatic research on co-regulator relationships, support of conflict resolution training activities, and evaluation of conflict resolution training/activities. If interested, applicants may also develop a project proposal (1 page) on a topic of mutual interest to work on during their internship with CPRC. Final products of recent intern projects have included: recommendations to the Agency’s Senior Dispute Resolution Official on improvements to internal collaboration, co-presenting the results of joint research with EPA at professional conferences, and assistance developing presenting new EPA training. The intern will work under the direction of CPRC staff, who will provide project feedback, involve the intern in appropriate meetings, and introduce the intern to relevant contacts and resources within EPA.

Who May Apply: Graduate students with proof of current enrollment and U.S. citizenship.
Please Submit: Cover letter, resume and project proposal
Schedule:	Half to full time, flexible
Compensation: Unpaid/Volunteer
Location: EPA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Deadline: March 31, 2011 for Summer Term (start and end dates negotiable)

Submit Applications to:
Mar. 30 | Check out the Undergraduate Awards
The Undergraduate Award seeks to inspire generations of scholars by supporting and celebrating their ideas. Both applicants and eventual recipients will benefit from the opportunity to collaborate with other students across subjects, disciplines and international borders. The award seeks talented and independent thinking individuals. This award is not a scholarship but similar to our University Medal in that recipients receive a distinction that, in the case of this award, distinguishes the recipient as a high achiever, innovative thinker, and provides networking opportunities for the future. The competition is open to junior and senior level students at Berkeley.

Recipients of the Award receive an all-expenses paid trip to Dublin, Ireland (in October 2012) where you will tour various attractions, including Trinity College, Dublin, and attend lectures and discussions. Winning papers will be published in the Undergraduate Journal. You will also be honored at an internationally publicized event where you will receive a medal. Last year four Berkeley students were honored in Ireland.

To guarantee a submission to the Undergraduate Awards 2012, students are required to register their intent to apply. The deadline to register is March 30, 2012. The submission deadline is in late June. Register on-line at http://www.undergraduateawards.com/Registration.asp. Should you have any questions, please contact Alicia Hayes at scholarships@learning.berkeley.edu.
Apr. 1 | Check out the Wilderness and Civilization Program
The Wilderness and Civilization program is located in some of the wildest country in the lower forty-eight states. Based at the University of Montana in Missoula, we are surrounded by vast forests, grasslands and millions of acres of unfragmented lands that support biodiversity and provide important wildlife habitat. This living classroom is integrated with on-campus studies at the University throughout the program. In Wilderness and Civilization, a small community of 25 students gets the best of both worlds: campus and field learning. Students spend 30 days in the field throughout the program, learning firsthand how the ecology, politics, history, and culture of a place shape conservation efforts. Field trips include a ten-day backpack into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area and shorter weekly trips to Yellowstone National Park, the Blackfoot, Bitterroot and Mission Valleys, and the Flathead Reservation. Field trips complement classroom teaching by exploring real world environmental issues and the specific ways that managers, community activists, tribal members, and landowners meet today’s conservation challenges. Students often say how much they benefit from understanding the connections between changing culture, politics, and approaches to landscape conservation.

The program offers students a Wilderness Studies Minor and is designed to complement any major. Students also learn practical skills and build their resumes through internships specifically focused on an area of their interest. Wilderness and Civilization students are placed with one of hundreds of educational, agency, and non-profit organizations in the Missoula area. In addition, many of the courses fulfill general education requirements and may count towards honors and/or major requirements*. The program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors of any major with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Because the Wilderness and Civilization Program is limited to 25 students, interested students need to apply soon. Applications can be obtained at online at www.cfc.umt.edu/wc. There is a rolling admission policy until the early application deadline of February 15th, and the general application deadline is April 1st. For more information visit www.cfc.umt.edu/wc or email wi@cfc.umt.edu.

Summer 2012 | Get trained as an Emergency Medical Technician
BearEMS, with support from the UCPD Office of Emergency Preparedness, has arranged for Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training to be conducted on campus this summer. This program will teach Berkeley students, staff, and faculty valuable skills relevant to emergency medicine, healthcare, and public safety.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be eligible to apply for national and California EMT certification. CA certified EMTs may volunteer for the campus as Disaster Service Workers. There are also additional volunteer opportunities for EMTs on campus and in the community. EMTs can also seek employment throughout the Bay Area and California in a variety of settings including Police, Fire, Ambulances, Emergency Rooms, Search and Rescue, and Ski Patrol.

Feb. 2 | Attend The Economics of Happiness: Film Showing and Discussion
The Economics of Happiness challenges us to restore our faith in humanity, challenges us to believe that it is possible to build a better world. The film describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, an unholy alliance of governments and big business continues to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, people all over the world are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance, and, far from the old institutions of power, communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm - an economics of localization.

The film features expert insights from Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten, Samdhong Rinpoche, Helena Norberg-Hodge, Michael Shuman, Zac Goldsmith and Keibo Oiwa, among others. An audience Q&A featuring staff from HowMany.org, The Buddhist Peace Fellowship and The International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC) will follow the film.

Time & Location: 7 - 9 p.m. at Berkeley Ecology Center, 2530 San Pablo Ave.
Cost: Free and open to all ages, donations accepted
