I am writing to let you know about a powerful academic and service learning program in Mexico offered by Living Routes focusing on consensus decision-making, social justice and the environment. Offered in the Winter-break, this 4-credit, UMass Amherst-accredited program program builds skills and experience in a bilinugal English/Spanish- speaking environment.

Based at Huehuecoyotl -- a beautiful ecovillage in Tepozlan, Morelos, students immerse themselves in leadership for social change and use these skills by performing community service in an indigenous village. During this exceptional program, students have the opportunity to:

    * Learn consensus and conflict transformation skills
* Design and complete a service project of benefit to the environment and local community
* Participate in a sweat lodge and other local rituals with Nahuatl leaders and shamans
* Dialogue with youth and women's groups around empowerment and sustainability
* Gain hands-on experience in eco-design, appropriate tech, and sustainable agriculture
* Earn 4 transferable credits through the University of Massachusetts Amherst

There is still time to apply for this program for this upcoming winter http://www.livingroutes.org/admissions/apply.htm. Please feel free to forward this information to newsletters, listservs, organizations, faculty, and students you think might be interested in learning more. Please contact me with any questions, or request materials for your office or library. Below is a bit more info about Living Routes and some links to our other academic programs.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Strawberry Creek Restoration Project
Are you interested in learning more about invasive and native plants on the UC Berkeley campus, learning techniques for invasive plant removal, and making a huge difference in the Strawberry Creek restoration areas on the UCB campus? Read on!

The Strawberry Creek Restoration Project (SCRP) is offering a new Student Restoration Leadership Program this Fall! Student Restoration Leaders (SRLs) will be given a thorough training on the history of Strawberry Creek restoration efforts, the native and invasive species of interest on campus, and the skills necessary to lead their own groups of volunteers on restoration events. Whether you have previously participated in Strawberry Creek restoration events or have no experience at all, this program will serve as a great way to become more involved in our efforts, and become a pro ivy puller! (Since all of your work will be voluntary, this training also looks great on resumes!)

This program will take place over a Friday and Saturday, for a total of 5 hours of training.
Friday November 6th, 3-5pm: Classroom Training Day. Meet in 370 University Hall
Saturday November 7th, 10am-1pm: Field Work day. Meet next to the bronze statue of the rugby players (1899 Tilden Statue) near the southwest corner of VLSB (along the walking path).

Please see the attached map for the exact locations of the trainings.

This two day program will be taught by Tim Pine and Karl Hans, EH&S staff members with extensive experience in restoration work along Strawberry Creek.

Attendance to both training days is mandatory to become a SRL. Enrollment is limited to 20 students.

Please email us with additional questions or a request to participate in the program. Please include your name, major and year at Cal, previous involvement in the SCRP or other restoration programs, and how you will benefit from this training program. Your response need not be extensive, we just want to know a little about you! You will receive a confirmation email
informing you if you have been enrolled in the course. Please email us at: tpine@berkeley.edu.

Community Rebuilds Spring Internship Program
Are you graduating a semester early or a semester late? OR Do you just want to take a break from school and have a life-changing sustainable living experience?

Apply to be an intern with Community Rebuilds in Moab, UT, a unique affordable housing organization that replaces dilapidated trailer homes with beautiful, durable, energy efficient, and sustainable straw bale homes.

As an intern, you will live in the Moab community with your seven fellow interns for four and a half months learning about natural building by working with a natural building expert and general contractor to build the entire home! It is an unpaid internship, but your housing will be provided, as will a $100/month stipend to offset food costs. Otherwise you will just have a blast living in one of the greatest communities in one of the most beautiful parts of the country doing a great thing!

Our first build semester will take place this spring from January 15-May 30, 2010, though we are also accepting applications for the fall build from August 1 - December 15.

Our application and recommendation forms can be found on our website: http://www.communityrebuilds.org/. You can also find us on Facebook! Please let me know what other questions you have! I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,
Noah Aptekar
