Study in New Orleans in Fall 2010!
Info sessions: February 3, 5, 8, and 11, 7pm (Location TBD)
Email to be put on reminder list: magnolia.katrina@gmail.com
The Magnolia Project is a student-initiated service-learning group that since summer 2008 has sent almost 200 Cal students to the Gulf Coast to assist grassroots organizations in rebuilding efforts post-Hurricane Katrina. We are presently the premier organization on the Cal campus dedicated to seeking justice in the Gulf Coast and connecting relevant social issues of race and class to East Bay communities.
Courses: Participating students will enroll in two classes at UNO. One is a core class that all participating students are required to take, a sociology class on racial issues that uses Hurricane Katrina as a case study. Students are free to choose their second course.
Field Study: In addition to attending these two classes, students will earn 6 units of field study by engaging in a 20-hour/week internship at a community based organization. While there, students will engage in a community-based research project, which culminates in a policy paper. Throughout the research process, a UC, Berkeley faculty member will serve as an advisor to the intern.
Cost: UC Berkeley financial aid is transferable. All fees are paid to UC Berkeley. Travel to/from New Orleans is additional.
Eligibility: Current 3rd or 4th year UC Berkeley undergraduates in good standing. Students are responsible for meeting with financial aid and academic advisers to ensure aid and credit will transfer!

SEEDS is a program of the Ecological Society of America that promotes participation of underrepresented students in ecology. The program is aimed at undergraduates, and graduate students play important roles in SEEDS, serving as mentors and role models. If you are interested in getting involved, there will be an organizational meeting for re-starting the UC Berkeley chapter of SEEDS this Wednesday, 12/9, at 1 pm in 5047 VLSB. We are looking for participation from both graduate and undergraduate students.
Email me Mariah Gonzalez (mariahrose@berkeley.edu) if you have questions, or just show up. Here is where you can learn more about SEEDS: http://www.esa.org/seeds/
