My Summer Plans
In two weeks I will be leaving for Uganda, and I'm really excited! I am going to be working with the Uganda Village Project, a non-profit providing sustainable public health projects in the Iganga District of Uganda. I have never been to Africa before, so I'm excited, but at the same time I don't really know what to expect. I'm pretty much ready to go; I got my malaria pills, my passport, my plane ticket. I will be there for two and a half months, with no electricity, flushing toilets, or running water.
I think it will be a life-changing experience. It should be pretty interesting switching gears from finals week to going away to Africa. This trip is my practice experience for my minor, Global Poverty and Practice. The minor has given me the opportunity to integrate my environmental science background with real-world problems. I hope that while I am there, I will be able to give back as much as I gain. As a high school student, I would have never guessed that I would be traveling to so many places in college or getting to experience so many different things. I've volunteered and studied also in Honduras and Costa Rica, and both were amazing learning experiences. I feel like coming to Berkeley has really changed the way that I view the world. After I come back, I'll make sure to blog about how it went!
