Advice for Upcoming Internship Applications
With summer coming up, many of you may be considering summer internships! Many deadlines have already passed, but there are still a few out there that you may want to consider. The internship that I participated in last summer, the STEER program (Short Term Education Experiences for Research in Environmental Studies), has a deadline of March 23! The STEER internship was a really great experience for me. Not only do you get to do research (I did mine with CERCH on children's exposures to environmental pollutants in childcare education settings), but you also get to go on field trips and attend seminars. It actually solidified my desire to be involved in the environmental sciences and to eventually get an M.P.H. PS: You also get paid. :)
Like many other internships, the STEER program requires the following:
1. The application itself
2. Two letters of recommendations
3. Transcript
4. A 2-4 page goal statement
The first step is to figure out if this is the right program for you. Always take a look at the faculty profiles and determine if the project pertain to your interests. When you begin writing your goal statement, be sure to address those specific points of interest.
The second step is always to ask faculty members and professors for letters of recommendations. This, and writing your goal statement, are the hardest parts of the application. What you need to do is find people who know you really well and have worked with you for an extended period of time. If necessary, ask a GSI that you have worked closely with.
Application and transcript are pretty straightforward.
The last step is the interview. After narrowing down the group of applicants, you'll be lucky if you get an interview! Just be as charming as you can and make conversation with the person. I was lucky to be interviewed by Marion Gillen, who has since then retired, but Gayle Cepparo, the new program coordinator, is also very nice and approachable.
