Go Bears ... Polar Bears, That Is

“Why do polar bears matter so much?” Zac Unger, M.S. Range Management ’00, asks in his new book, Never Look a Polar Bear in the Eye, published this February by Da Capo Press. He answers that question through a rollicking tale — part science journalism, part adventure story — that follows his “family field trip” to the remote edge of the Arctic wilderness. There he discovered some unexpected truths about so-called polar-bear science, and possibly more about the behavior of humans in extreme — and extremely political — situations. Unger, who is an Oakland firefighter and paramedic, also wrote Working Fire: The Making of a Fireman.
