Insect Observations: An Introduction to Insects

LESSON PURPOSE OR GOAL:

  • Have students understand basic principles of insect anatomy: 3 legs, 3 body parts
  • Give students exposure to exotic and common insect species
  • Engage them in scientific inquiry

LESSON DESCRIPTION:

  • Explain basic facts about insect anatomies,
  • Ask kids to think about common insects
  • Pass out worksheet
  • Discuss findings

APPROX. CLASS TIME NEEDED: 50 minutes

MATERIALS

  • Insect Identification Worksheet (see below)
  • Live and dead insects

PREPARATION:

Collect bugs and put them in appropriate containers

INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY:

Ask kids to list insects they are familiar with
