Beneficial Insects

LESSON PURPOSE OR GOAL:

  • Have students understand different beneficial insects and useful qualities
  • Give students exposure to exotic and common insect species
  • Engage them in scientific inquiry

LESSON DESCRIPTION:

  • Explain basic facts about beneficials
  • Define biological control
  • Have students observe wasp-worm relationship as an example of biological control
  • Discuss findings

APPROX. CLASS TIME NEEDED: 50 minutes

 

RELATED RESOURCES:

  • General insect books
  • Biological control info

MATERIALS

  • Petri dish with goniosis wasp and navel orange worm
  • Paper for note taking

PREPARATION

Collect bugs and put them in petri dish

 

INTRODUCTION ACTIVITY:

Ask kids to list insects that are good for humans

 

PROCEDURE:

  1. Pass out worms in dishes
  2. Walk around and put one wasp in each dish

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

Follow up observations for ensuing 4 weeks and watch changes in dish as wasp lays eggs on worm
