The treatments are taking place on CA State Parks property in the Jay Smith Road area north of Miranda in Southern Humboldt County. The project will include the removal of infected tanoak, CA bay laurel, and madrone trees, as well as the pruning of coast redwood trees in a 50-acre area. Based on permits and crew availability, pile burning and potential under-burning are tentatively planned for fall, 2006. Monitoring of project results will continue for several years. With landowner permission, several other sites in the southern Humboldt region are scheduled for treatment in the coming months. Funding for the project has come from the USDA Forest Service (FS) and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), with in-kind matches from the University of CA and CA State Parks. Project Collaborators include CA State Parks, University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), the University of California, CDF, the Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council, and the USDA FS. | | | | | "Slow the Spread"In an effort to slow the spread of Phytophthora ramorum, the Humboldt County Department of Agriculture, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), and the University of California Cooperative Extension removed and disposed of 77 California bay laurel trees
infected with Phytophthora ramorum in Humboldt County. The project took place February 19-20, 2004, in the County's only known area of infection on six different properties. Following the treatment, soil, water, and plants in the area will be monitored to determine if this procedure was effective in limiting pathogen spread in Humboldt County and if further treatments are warranted. June 2003On June 11, 2003, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed that Phytophthora ramorum (European mating type) was detected on a Rhododendron plant at a nursery in Greater Vancouver, B.C. The five photos show the foliar symptoms on the infected Rhododendron plants, the securing of the plants in that section of the nursery, and the destruction of the entire block where the infected plants were discovered. To read the complete history of the incident, please see the July 2003 Monthly Report. Photos are by Shane Sela, CFIA.
