Joint Community Development Neighborhood Environmental Watch (NEW) Program
During
1997-98, the Center's NEW Program (Principal Investigator - CNR Associate
Dean Donald Dahlsten), entered its second of three years and undertook
the following activities in the two JCD sites of San Pablo Avenue and Fruitvale
and in association with the City of Oakland's youth employment program,
Team Oakland, other Oakland City departments, UC Cooperative Extension
of Alameda, Spanish Speaking Unity Council, and interested private individuals):
-
Gardening
curriculum and science project at Golden Gate Elementary School;
-
Physical
improvements to the Golden Gate Community Garden;
-
Assistance
to Fruitvale's Bridge Street Home Alert, including provision of its street
trees and advice on creek clean-up and gardening;
-
An
ESPM course on urban environmentalism, with student generated curricula
for Team Oakland's environmental education module as part of its training
program;
-
Incorporation
of selected Team Oakland students in the College's summer program for high
school and community college students; and
-
Assistance
for other environmental projects in the two sites, e.g., purchase of trees
for both sites during Earth Day.
Planned
NEW activities for 1998-99, the last year of the program, will be much
as they were this year, either at the existing projects or undertaking
the same activities at different sites in the two program areas. A no-cost
extension looks likely, though efforts will need to begin soon next year
to find additional sources of funding, particularly in support of the College's
summer program and high school outreach efforts.
