Past Conferences

Healthy Communities and Healthy Children: The ABCs of Building Healthy Communities was held Saturday, July 14, 2007 at UC Berkeley Extension. With rates of pediatric obesity continuing to skyrocket, the need to create environments that . support healthy eating practices and active living for children and adolescents has never been greater. This workshop provides a comprehensive overview of a range of community-based strategies for promoting healthy lifestyles in youth. Leading researchers and public health practitioners in the field address the importance of sustainable environmental change through a variety of strategies, including influencing stakeholders in neighborhood settings and developing effective wellness policies.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week: Rock Ya Body: Celebrate Health at Every Size was held March 12-16, 2007.Stop thinking about size and start moving! Get fit, eat deliciously, and be healthy! Fashions, family, peers, cultural practices, and societal norms all influence our self esteem, body image, and eating and exercise habits. Having a healthy relationship with food, our bodies, and ourselves is important, yet often times difficult. Rock Ya Body: Celebrate Health at Every Size is Cal's celebration of healthful lifestyles for everyone! Whether you're young or old, big or small, being healthy and happy is possible. The fourth bi-annual California childhood obesity conference, Protecting the Future of Our Children, was held in San Diego on January 23-26: This conference brought together 1700 people interested in research, prevention, education and treatment of obesity in pre-school and school-aged children. The 2007 conference was hosted by the California Department of Health Services, California Department of Education, UC Berkeley Center for Weight & Health, and The California Endowment with additional support from the CDC's 5 A Day for Better Health Program and the Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases, Kaiser Permanente, The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation, California State Parks, The American Cancer Society, the Dairy Council of California, L.A. Care Health Plan, CalOptima, Health Net of California, Inc., Peaceful Playgrounds Program, Inc., Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK), University of California, Davis -Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Blue Cross of California, and Western Growers Association. Preventing Overweight and Obesity in Children: What Every Health and Mental Health Professional Should Know was held June 17, 2005, at UC Berkeley Extension, Berkeley, CA. The day long conference provided a comprehensive overview of childhood overweight and obesity in the U.S. Leading researchers in the field addressed the question of genetics versus the environment, identified the major factors contributing to increasing obesity and discussed what health and mental health professionals can do to impact them and reverse this trend.

The third bi-annual California childhood obesity conference, 2005 California Childhood Obesity Conference - Launching a Movement: Linking our Efforts to Make a Difference., was held in San Diego on January 9-12: This conference was a great success, bringing together over 1400 people interested in research, prevention, education and treatment of obesity in pre-school and school-aged children. The 2005 conference was hosted by California Department of Education, California Department of Health Services, and the Center for Weight and Health with additional sponsorship from Kaiser Permanente, The California Endowment, with Blue Cross of California, LA Health Care Plan, California State Parks, Dairy Council of California, FITWIZE 4 Kids, Inc., Peaceful Playgrounds, Inc., American Academy of Pediatrics - Chapter 3 and University of California, Davis, Communications Services.

The 2nd Annual Science & Society Research Conferenc,: Confronting Obesity: Science, Society, & Health, was held Thursday, April 15, 2004, in Berkeley CA. The conference was co-sponsored by the Center for Health Research, the Center for Weight and Health, and the Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Policy.

The second bi-annual California childhood obesity conference, co-sponsored by the California Department of Health Services, was held in San Diego on January 6-8: 2003 California Childhood Obesity Conference - Making an Impact Now: Environmental, Family and Clinical Approaches. This conference was a resounding success, bringing together over 1100 people interested in research, prevention, education and treatment of obesity in pre-school and school-aged children.

The Center's symposium, Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes in Children: Pathogenesis to Public Policy, was held September 27, 2002 on the UC Berkeley campus. The symposium brought together 34 participants, including a panel of national experts, to assess the current state of knowledge and develop policy recommendations for preventing Type 2 diabetes in children.

On Valentine's Day February 14, 2002, the Center sponsored a conference entitled Love Your Body:Promoting Positive Body Image and Preventing Eating Disorders in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults. This one-day conference took place on the Clark Kerr Campus and was enthusiastically received by an audience of 142. The conference was highly rated according to questionnaires completed by the participants. Articles about the conference appeared in the Daily Planet and the Oakland Tribune.

The first bi-annual California childhood obesity conference, co-sponsored by the California Department of Health Services, was held in San Diego on March 19-20: 2001 California Childhood Obesity Conference: Issues, Strategies and Programs. This conference was a great success, bringing together over 900 people interested in research, prevention, education and treatment of obesity in pre-school and school-aged children.

The Center's first symposium was held at UC Berkeley in October, 1999: Pediatric Obesity in the 21st Century: A Research Symposium on Prevention. This event successfully brought together 126 Bay area faculty, researchers, and service providers to explore multidisciplinary prevention research efforts. http://www.usda.gov/cnpp/obesity.htm
