Patricia Crawford, DrPH, RD
Co-Director

Pat Crawford, Dr. PH, RD, is Co-Director of the Center for Weight and Health, Cooperative Extension Nutrition Specialist in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Health and Department  of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Crawford directed the 10-year longitudinal NHLBI Growth & Health Study, a study of the development of cardiovascular risk factors in African American and white girls, as well as the Five-State FitWIC Initiative to Prevent Pediatric Overweight. She has developed numerous obesity prevention materials, including the Fit Families novela series for Latino families and Lets Getting Moving, an activity program for those who work with young children.
 
Dr. Crawford's current studies include evaluations of large community-based obesity initiatives and school-based policy interventions.
 
Dr. Crawford is a co-author of the recently released book, Obesity: Dietary and Developmental Influences (CRC Press, Boca Raton, FL, 2006); the American Dietetic Association position paper entitled Individual-,family-, school-, and community-based interventions for pediatric overweight (J Am Diet Assoc 2006 June, 106[6]); and 80 articles in the field of child obesity prevention.

  May Wang , DrPH, RD
Co-Director

May Wang is Adjunct Asst. Professor, School of Public Health, at UC Berkeley, and a Co-Director of the Center for Weight and Health. She currently leads an epidemiologic study that aims to examine the influence of the neighborhood food environment on obesity development, and an intervention study that aims to promote bone heath in low income Food Stamp eligible women. In the conduct of her research, Dr. Wang strives to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach, and enthusiastically partners with clinicians, physiologists, sociologists, social workers, and economists, among others. Her research interests include: neighborhood and family environmental influences on diet-related conditions; socioeconomic disparities in nutrition and health; early life risk factors of osteoporosis; diet assessment methods for ethnically diverse populations, and diet and health in immigrant populations

Associate Director

Gail Woodward-Lopez, MPH, RD
Associate Director

Gail Woodward-Lopez, MPH, RD is currently Associate Director of the Center for Weight and Health at UC Berkeley. She received her BA in neurobiology and MPH at UC Berkeley with an emphasis in nutrition. She has over 15 years experience developing, implementing and evaluating public health programs in a variety of settings here and abroad. Her current areas of expertise include determinants of obesity and effective strategies to prevent overweight. In her current position she oversees and coordinates the Center's activities and initiatives. She is responsible for research and intervention program development regarding weight-related issues and food security. She also directs activities to gather, synthesize, interpret and disseminate information on topics of concern to the Center. Other areas of expertise include maternal and child health, curriculum development, training , education and evaluation. She is bilingual and has worked extensively with the Latino community in California and Latin America. Her previous positions include: Senior Technical Advisor for Nutrition and Academic Program Development with Wellstart International in San Diego, Population Fellow with The Center for Adolescent Education in Mexico City, Perinatal Director at Vacaville Community Clinic, Education Program Manager for Planned Parenthood of Western Washington and Evaluation Specialist for the Mission Neighborhood Health Center in San Francisco. She has served as a consultant for UNICEF in Nicaragua, the Arizona-Mexico Border Health Foundation in Tucson and PATH ( Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) in Mexico.
