2008 California Food Guide (CFG)
Compiled primarily by The California Department of Health Care Services and the California Department of Public Health, the 2008 California Food Guide (CFG) examines the unique needs of age groups, racial and ethnic groups and low-income populations. It details nutrition needs for pregnant and breastfeeding women and gives an insightful look at how nutrition impacts obesity, diabetes and heart disease. There is also information on vegetarian diets, environmental contaminants in foods, food insecurity and other current topics to promote healthy eating habits and physical activity for Californians.

The Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC)
The Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) at the National Agricultural Library (NAL) has been a leader in food and human nutrition information dissemination since 1971. FNIC's web site provides a directory to credible, accurate, and practical resources for consumers, nutrition and health professionals, educators and government personnel. Visitors can find printable format educational materials, government reports, research papers and more. FNIC nutrition information specialists review all site content to ensure top quality resources.

HeartMemo
HeartMemo is a publication for health professionals. It reports activities of NHLBI education programs and initiatives and findings from Institute-supported research on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Published three times a year, each issue describes effective health promotion strategies and supplies such useful information as data, funding and other resources, and schedules for upcoming NHLBI-affiliated meetings.
Increasing Physical Activity: A Report on Recommendations of the Task Force on Community Preventative Services
This report includes recommendations on two informational approaches, three behavioral approaches, three behavioral and social approaches, one intervention to increase physical activity by using environmental and policy approaches, and how to apply the interventions locally.
Kids Module - Parents and Children Sharing Food Tasks
This curriculum module helpls paraprofessionals teach parents to develop good eating habits in thier children. It includes a teacher's guide with background information and lesson plans; a videotape in English and Spanish which encourages parents to help their children decide how much to eat, and English and Spanish masters of Good News for Parents, which stresses positive ways parents can help their children develop good eating habits.

sample news releases, talking points, and tips on reaching legislators.
Nutrition
and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Nutrition
and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans, is published
jointly every 5 years by the Department of Health and Human
Services (HHS) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA). The
Guidelines provide authoritative advice for people two years
and older about how good dietary habits can promote health
and reduce risk for major chronic diseases. They serve as
the basis for Federal food and nutrition education programs.

Education for Low-literate Teens and Adults
This is a quick guide to articles, books, kits, videos and web
sites that discuss nutrition education for teens and adults
with limited reading skills. It also lists resources that will
help you create and find easy-to-read print materials. Some
English as a Second Language materials are included, however,
this is not a major focus of the list.

Pre-recorded messages in English & Spanish on obesity prevention on AsisTel de la UC
The Spanish Broadcast & Media Services and ANR’s News & Information Outreach, working with the Body, Weight and Health Workgroup, and a group of NFCSA, have developed twenty pre-recorded messages in English and Spanish.
Messages on obesity prevention with advice specific to children, senior citizens and the general population are available by calling 1-800-514-4494. The selection of one- to two-minute-long recorded messages is designed to provide information to Californians and consumers throughout the nation who have no access to the Internet and/or are verbal learners.
Callers simply dial 1-800-514-4494 and punch in the number of the message (see news release) they wish to hear. An audio listing of the titles and corresponding numbers is also available on the toll-free line.

The Recipe Finder database: Food Stamp Nutrition Connections Web site
The Recipe Finder is an online database of healthy recipes designed for food stamp educators, but can be used by any nutrition educator working with low-income audiences. The database can be searched by cost, nutrition education topic, theme, menu items, audience, and cooking equipment. In addition to all of the search options, you also have the ability to rate the recipes and post a review of the recipe.

Lessons to Raise Diabetes Awareness in Latinos
This new curriculum for nutrition educators focuses on diabetes awareness and prevention for adult Latinos. Included is information about the risks and consequences of diabetes; treatment, early diagnosis,and control; Latino attitudes, beliefs, and lifestyle factors; traditional folkremedies used to treat symptoms; and suggestions for ways to make positive changes in behavior. Also included are two sample lesson plans, participant self-tests and answer keys, tips for facilitating group discussion, suggestions for starting a walking program, and 10 reproducible black-and-white handouts - each in English and Spanish - with quizzes, exercises, recipes, and other tips for success.
Tools
for Evaluating Environmental Change
This
website, hosted by the Center for Advanced Studies in Nutrition
and Social Marketing at UC Davis, lists tools that have been
made available through the cooperation of many different organizations,
groups, and agencies from both the public and private sectors.
Tools that have been formally validated are indicated in the
description. Those that have not been validated have been developed
by experienced researchers and program planners, using tested
questions of others, expert reviewers, and pre-testing to guide
their development. This compilation of tools can be used to
evaluate environmental factors such as; walkability of a community,
availability of healthy food in grocery stores, social supports

WIN the Rockies (Wellness IN the Rockies)
WIN the Rockies, a community-based research, intervention and outreach project seeks to improve health in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming by addressing obesity innovatively and effectively. Through a four-year food and nutrition-related behavior-change consortium project involving the University of Idaho, Montana State University, the University of Wyoming, their extension services, their WWAMI Medical Education Programs, the Area Health Education Centers in Wyoming and Montana, along with other state organizations and community groups, WIN presents topics such as valuing health, respecting body-size differences, enjoying the benefits of self-acceptance, enjoying physically active living, and enjoying healthful and pleasurable eating to communities in the Rockies. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative between the American Heart Association and the William J. Nutrition Counseling: Reframing
the Battle Against Obesity
This is an award-winning video developed as a part of the Fit
WIC project. The video addresses the prevention and management
of childhood obesity, using day-in-the-life segments with 3
low-income mothers who are WIC clients to highlight the struggles
parents face rearing young children. It is intended to encourage
discussion among healthcare professionals and policy makers
about the fact that parents may be unable to implement nutritional
advice without improved child-rearing skills.

This guide contains
strategies and tools to help health professionals provide
nutrition supervision partnerships with families and communities.
The guide presents developmental nutrition guidelines for
children and adolescents from birth to 21, emphasizing health
promotion, disease prevention, and early recognition of nutrition
concerns. The information in the guide can also be adapted

This guide is designed
