BALDCYPRESS

Like the redwood this is a member of a very ancient genus. It is peculiar in that it inhabits swamps that are submerged much of the year. Baldcypress is native along the streams and in the swamps along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts from Delaware south to Florida and west to Texas and north along the Mississippi bottoms to southern Illinois and Indiana. It is not related to the Monterey cypress of California. Attains a maximum size of 12' x 150', averaging 3-5' x 100' .The wood is exceptionally durable and is therefore prized for greenhouse lumber, for posts, stakes, shingles, siding and tanks, and is also used for interior trim, boxes and crates.
