Also known as linden, the European name. A tree widely distributed in the eastern half of the U.S. and of considerable economic importance. Its natural range extends from New Brunswick south to Virginia and Alabama, and west to the Dakotas, Kansas and Texas. Most abundant in the Lake States. Attains a maximum size of 4' x 140' and averages 21/2' x 80'. Wood is light and soft but tought and easily worked. Used for vehicle bodies, furniture, excelsior, trunks, beehives, drawing boards, cabinets and veneer.
