BUTTERNUT
(Juglans cinerea L.)
(Juglandaceae)
A close relative of our Eastern Black Walnut but much inferior as to technical value of its wood. Sometimes known as White Walnut. Found native from New Brunswck west to Dakota and south to New York and Pennsylvania, to northern Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas and Missouri. Maximum size 3' x 100', averaging much less. This wood is light and soft, rather course-textured and not strong. Used for furniture and interior trim.
