COTTONWOOD

(Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh.)

(Salicaceae)

A common tree of the stream borders and flats of the eastern forests, occurring naturally from eastern Canada south to Florida and west along the rivers to the Rocky Mountains. Often used as a street tree and for shelter belts on the plains and prairies. A large tree, sometimes 100 feet high and over 6 feet in diameter. The wood is soft, light in weight, and tough and odorless. Subject to excessive warping when not carefully dried. Much used for boxes and crates.
