RED FIR
(Abies magnifica A. Murr.)
(Pinaceae)
A tree of the higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada. Also known as silver fir particularly as Christmas trees. Because in general not readily accessible, it has not been cut on a large scale until after 1950. Natural range extends from central Oregon southward to Tulare County in California both in the Cascades and Sierra. Maximum size 10' x 200' but averages only 30" x 120'. The wood is moderately heavy and firm but soft and straight-grained. Used largely for construction lumber, packing boxes and pulp. This board is 2" x 24" x 101/2'. The holes are nail holes, and are not the work of insects.
