WESTERN RED CEDAR
(Thuja plicata Donn. ex D. Don)
(Cupressaceae)
Also known as Giant Arborvitae, and sometimes as America's overcoat wood because it is so widely used, more so than any other wood, for shingles and siding. Range extends from southern Alaska to Mendocino County, California and east to the Rockies in Montana. Maximum size is 15' x 200', average 3-8' x 100- 150'. The wood is light, soft, straight-grained, fine- textured and very durable. Used for shingles, siding, posts, poles, patterns, cooperage, boat-building, etc. Racing shells (singles to 8-oared) have long been built of this wood. This board is 21/4" x 381/4" x 10', 77 board feet.
