WHITE ASH

(Fraxinus americana L.)

(Oleaceae)

The most valuable of our native ashes and world-famous for its quality and technical properties. Found native from Nova Scotia west to Minnesota, and south to Texas and Florida. Maximum size 6' x 120', average 21/2' x 20-90'. The wood is very tough and resilient, and is used for farm implements, tool handles, vehicle bodies, baseball bats, tennis rackets, oars, spring boards, piano frames, and to some extent for furniture and interior trim. This specimen exhibits an odd wavy grain which detracts from its utility.
