America's greatest timber tree. No tree has contributed more to the commercial development of the United States. Once very abundant and found from Newfoundland to Minnesota and south through New York and Pennsylvania, along the Appalachians to Georgia. Only a remnant remains. Maximum size 6' x 250' but averages only 2-2 1/2 ' x 150'. This wood is of the greatest technical value: soft, light, easily worked and holds its shape. Used for construction, cabinets, furniture, patterns, matches, spars. This specimen is 11/4" x 17" x10'10".
