A tree of increasing importance as the supply of more valuable hardwoods diminishes. Its native home extends from Newfoundland west to Minnesota and south along the mountains to Tennessee and North Carolina. Attains a maximum size of 4' x 100'. The wood is compact, hard, heavy and strong, and is used for furniture, interior trim, broom handles, woodenware, veneers, wheel hubs, flooring. Particularly important for furniture, doors and interior finish.
