The Honors Program
For undergraduate students in the major wishing to pursue independent
research beyond the standard requirements of the
Department of Nutritional Sciences, the department offers the H196 course
series. Students who successfully complete the series will
be awarded Departmental Honors in Nutritional Sciences and presented with a
Departmental Certificate.
Requirements
- Students must apply no later than the beginning of their senior year.
- A GPA of 3.3 or higher is required in both overall and major course
work.
- Students enroll in H196 for a letter grade and may take between 2-4
units per semester but must complete a total of 8 units to
qualify for the College Honors Distinction. Each unit represents
three hours of work per week.
- Attendance in a graduate seminar course is recommended.
- An approved thesis must be submitted for filing with the
department.
The primary focus of the Honors Program is laboratory research. However, at
the conclusion of their research, sutdents must write a
thesis based upon their work. This thesis will be reviewed by a committee of
three faculty members. Only if the work and the thesis
are found to be satisfactory will the student receive the Department Honors
Certificate.
One member of the committee must also be the faculty sponsor of the Honors
Project. The other two committee members will serve
as readers and their presence on the committee must be approved by the
faculty sponsor.
Enrollment Procedure
- Find a faculty member willing to sponsor the project and get the
instructor's signature on the H196 application. At this time
the applicant should also get sponsor approval of the 2 faculty
readers.
- Obtain an application from the Student Affairs Office in 127
Morgan Hall.
- Create a typed proposal (no longer than 300 words) of the
research intended. This should include a tentative work schedule
of the research.
- Have the 3 faculty evaluators sign the H196 application
and return it to the Student Affairs Office in 127 Morgan
Hall.
It is the students' responsibility to create an approved work schedule with
their advisors. The thesis must be submitted at least 2
weeks prior to the end of the final semester to allow for review by the
committee. The student should submit 4 typed copies of the
thesis (one for each committee member and one to be kept on file) which will
not be returned to the student.
Students should also ask for a copy of the CNR "Honors Classifications
Eligibility Criteria" information sheet when picking up and
application for the H196 program in Nutritional Sciences. This sheet
contains important information regarding qualifying for the
College Honors Distinction which is noted on your diploma.
Completion of the Honors Program in Nutritional Sciences does not
automatically guarantee College Honors. Please pick up this
sheet.
