--Under Construction--

Athough you are just getting started, it can be helpful to look down the road a bit to see where you are going. If you just look at what you need to do during the first semester, you can miss how your fall courses fit into the larger picture of your years at Cal.

Below are several examples of possible four-year schedules for ES students. Students should talk to the ES advisor about their particular circumstances, as many other combinations of classes are possible.

Links on this page:

  • Sample Plan 1: Fulfills Biological Science or Social Science concentration
  • Sample Plan 2: Fulfills Social Science concentration
  • Sample Plan 3: Fulfills Biological Science or Social Science concentration
  • Sample Plan 4: Fulfills Physical Science concentration
  • Sample Plan 5: Fulfills Biological Science or Social Science concentration

No one will hold you exactly to the plans below, but they are useful as a general guide. That is not to say that you cannot meander off the path now and then, but since there is a final goal (graduation), it is a good idea to keep it in your sights while you meander.

When looking at the plans, keep the following in mind:

  • Students must average 15 units each term in order to reach the 120 unit minimum for graduation. Thus, a student cannot always choose the minimum number of units (13) each term.
  • "M" is for major requirements, "B" is for breadth requirements, and "E" is for electives.
  • It is possible to overlap some requirements. For example, ESPM C160 fulfills HEI, American Cultures, and a 7-course Breadth requirement. Overlapping requirements will give students more opportunities to take electives.
  • The concentrations listed above each planrepresent the concentration areas completed by the stated courses. All of the plans can be modified for other concentrations.
For example, in Plan 1, a student could change Physics 8A to Physics 7A and add Physics 7B to make it match the Physical Science concentration. A Physical Science concentration student could further modify the biology courses from Bio 1A and Bio 1B to Bio 11 and an upper division biology. A student in the social science concentration could make the same modification to the biology courses as well as switching Math 1A and Math 1B to Math 16A and 16B. The other plans can be similarly modified.
  • Remember, these plans are meant as a guide, not as dictums that must be adhered to absolutely.
