Updates: SAF convention was good, Dexter gives it thumbs up, though we lost the quiz bowl and came in 2nd place for the scavenger hunt. x-mas tree cut: tentative date Dec. 1 still waiting for the okay from the SPI people. Suggestions for advertisements are craigslist, facebook, flyers @ local businesses. NOTE: when you're selling the trees, be careful with trees that are sprayed with fire retardants the chemicals used are very dangerous. Logging sports shirts: Nataly is putting in the order today so the shirts would arrive by next Friday. She'll ordering about 30 shirts. They will go on sale for $15 each. Tree planting: tentative date Nov. 18th (we're still waiting for the director , Tom, to give an okay for the date.) Dexter will try to talk to Tom. We WILL use DRY WATER from the SAF. TIMBER: send pictures to Lauren for Timber at Lmoser@berkeley.edu pictures can be from forestry club, including camp photos. Guest Speaker: David Ganz, CAF president, would also like pictures for the Alumni Calender. CAF is involved with Adopt a Community College Program, which the forestry club would like to take part in as well. It is a recruitment program focusing on recruiting forestry students to Cal. We need to have a bigger student body to have a strong forestry program because as of now many courses aren't offer because the Forestry student body is at a low number. Our role in the Adopt a CC program would be to give students the "inside" view of Cal. He also wants to reopen the CAF Mentor Program. Cal students will be matched with a Professional of interest. The student will be able to shadow the professional for a day. Arrangements will be to get the student to and from the work place. There's approximately 1000 alumni we can shadow. So if you're interested please do say so. If you're graduating soon, please keep the idea of joining CAF in mind. Such organizations have been a great supporter of us students, but the program would not exist without members. The dues are as follows: 1st year out of school is free, then dues are dependent on your professional career. FYI: CAF have supported us in SAF conventions, logging sports, Russell welcome back picnic, CAF banquet, Summer Camp Alumni weekend, and the funds for the new computer lab at camp. They also provide scholarships for graduating seniors. David's contact: Dganz@tssconsultants.com work 510.336.0809 cell 415.602.1395

------------------------------------------------------------------------ A Tree Joke A young man who was also an avid golfer found himself with a few hours to spare one afternoon. He figured if he hurried and played very fast, he could get in 9 holes before he had to head home. Just as he was about to tee off an old gentleman shuffled onto the tee and asked if he could accompany the young man as he was golfing alone. Not being able to say no, he allowed the old gent to join him. To his surprise the old man played fairly quickly. He didn't hit the ball far, but plodded along consistently and didn't waste much time. Finally, they reached the 9th fairway and the young man found himself with a tough shot. There was a large pine tree right in front of his ball - and directly between his ball and the green. After several minutes of debating how to hit the shot the old man finally said, "You know, when I was your age I'd hit the ball right over that tree." With that challenge placed before him, the youngster swung hard, hit the ball up, right smack into the top of the tree trunk and it thudded back on the ground not a foot from where it had originally lay. The old man offered one more comment, "Of course, when I was your age that pine tree was only 3 feet tall."
