3. US Forest Service Recruiting
4. Christmas Tree Cut
5. Logging Sports
6. Yule Ball

SAF National Convention
SAF was a great success! We learned lots of new things about research and forestry practices as well as made connections with alumni and other forestry professionals. All in all it was a beautiful program that we all really appreciated.

Forestry Club Outreach
There will be an opportunity for the Forestry Club to participate in a boy scout jamboree in Pleasant Hill on January 22nd, 2011. This will consist of tabling for boy scouts about becoming a forestry major and/or other natural resource majors. We will be letting them know what's what in the world of natural resources. Some members expressed an interest in this event and there will be more information as the date draws closer.

US Forest Service Recruiting
Paid Summer Jobs! On campus info session and interviews for Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, NV & CA(Bridgeport between Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes).
Wed., Nov 3, 5:00-6:30, 103 Mulford Hall. Information Session. Come learn about the region, what is offered and how to apply. Bring a resume and schedule an interview.
Thursday, Nov 4, 8:00-2:00, Mulford Lobby, First Floor. Info Table where you can meet recruiters and find out about positions, bring your resume! Friday, Nov 5. On campus interviews

Christmas Tree Cut
We will be holding a Christmas tree cut either during the last weekend of November or the first weekend of December. A group of 10-15 members will be traveling up to Sierra Pacific Industries land to cut trees as a fundraiser for the Forestry Club. This is the main source of income for club events, so if you are free during those times please come join us for a sleep over and day of fun in the woods. Kate Cahill sent out an email last week about both events and needs some feedback from those of you who are interested. It is likely that the dates of the Christmas tree cut will be dictated by SPI, but it is still important for Kate to know when people can make it. Please respond to her email at kgcahill@berkeley.edu. We will also need people to commit to helping sell the trees once we have them back on campus. We are also planning on selling wreaths, so we will be having a wreath making party at some point before the sale week which is planned for RRR week. Tell all the locals you know about our sale. Christmas trees will be $6/foot.

Logging Sports
The logging sports team has 6 members right now and we are looking for more who are interested. We will be holding practices this Friday at 3 and possibly Saturday and Sunday as well. We are preparing for our first competition which is on November 13th in Santa Cruz. Our practice site is located at the summit of Grizzly Peak where we chop and buck eucalyptus. Please email Rose or Lizzie at buckingbears@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the team.

Yule Ball
When forestry first started at Cal they would hold an annual Yule Ball, or Christmas Ball. This tradition died out sometime in the 50s, but this year we will be holding the 2nd annual return of the Yule Ball. It will entail dancing, cider, hard cider, mistletoe, and many other festive activities. If you are interested in helping plan the ball let Raphaela know at rfloreanibuzbee@gmail.com. It is tentatively planned for December 10th.

SAF Regional Convention
There is also a regional convention on January 14 & 15 of 2011 in Redding, CA for the Nor Cal region. It is quite a ways away, but we are looking for some ideas on ways to draw students to this year's convention. This year's theme is "Forestry 101" focusing on education in forestry. If you have any ideas please bring them up at the next Forestry Club meeting.

Bean Feed
There will be a bean feed tomorrow (Thursday) at 5:30 outside of Mulford. Bean feeds are a great way to meet faculty and other forestry enthusiasts as well as stuff your face with chili, cornbread, and beer (or other non-alcoholic beverages)! They are free if you have paid your dues and guests are welcome!

Club Sponsors
We discussed possibly getting company sponsors to raise money for the club. It would involve putting a link to a company's website on the forestry club website, however general consensus was that the forestry club website would probably not generate enough traffic to allow for revenue. If you have other ideas for club revenue please feel free to bring them up at the next meeting.

ALL OFFICERS
Please email your preferred email address for forestry club emails to Carlin at cstarrs@berkeley.edu.

Forestry Club List Serve
We agreed that it would be a good idea to create a separate list serve for the forestry club so that alumni would not have to read our emails about irrelevant forestry club topics.

TCI Expo
For those of you interested in Urban forestry or tree care issues, there is a large Tree Care Industry trade show and conference from November 11-13, 2010. Students get free admission if you work with a faculty advisor. However, the show is in Pittsburgh, PA. This conference will have a large student career fair and involvement of many tree care companies. For more info: www.tcia.org

USFS Recruiting
US Forest Service recruiter, Patti Ann Monzie, will be in the CNR Resource Center on Thursday, 9/16, 11:00-1:30 PM, to meet with students and recent graduates individually or in small groups. She will have information about summer paid opportunities for students and permanent positions for recent graduates. Patti represents the Washington-Oregon region, and is familiar all US Forest Service regions throughout the US. Summer internship deadlines are in early February, so plan ahead! Learn about the openings in biology, forestry, archeology, GIS, administration, land management, fire etc.

DUES!!
Please pay your dues to Rose. It is $5 per semester which allows for you to participate in delicious bean feeds and other awesome events such as camping trips and the SAF Convention!

Logging Sports

Hello Forestry Clubbers!

Get excited because the first Forestry Club meeting is this Wednesday 9/1 at 12 noon in Mulford (I am forgetting the room number but it is that small room by the men's bathroom on the first floor....you all know where it is). I will unfortunately not be there but Raphaela has so generously offered to run the first meeting so BE THERE! It feels great to be back and ready for another great year of FORESTRY CLUB.

Thanks,
Kate
