This Sunday at 2pm we're going to start planting in the newly completed California Native Plant Garden. Where is this mystical garden of which I speak? Why, it's right behind Giannini and Wellman Halls in the parking lot! Magical indeed! Please arrive on time because we'll be moving around campus to collect specimens for transplant. If you have any good ideas for exciting events or artwork you would like to submit for the centennial gear please contact Carlin at cstarrs@berkeley.edu. Also, if you are interested in joining the Forestry Club Centennial Committee, please email Raphaela at rfloreanibuzbee@gmail.com.

Forestry Club Bar Crawl!!
For all the 21+ forestry club members we will be having a forestry club bar crawl on Wednesday the 16th in the evening. There will be more emails with details as the date grows closer. Plan for an early evening sort of event. We will probably be hitting up bars along Shattuck Ave.

Snow Trip
There has been some interest in organizing a forestry club snow trip. It would be a weekend in the snow that will not be club funded, so bring a friend :) If you are interested or would like more information email Jamie at jamie.r.richards@gmail.com.

Club Merchandise
After tearing apart the forestry club closet we(Me, Ariel, & Carlin) were pleasantly surprised to find a couple of boxes of prime merchandise. We will be selling these at reduced prices in order to make room for the centennial merchandise. We will have several different t-shirts, the cal forester sweatshirt, patch, and belt buckle available to buy at club meetings starting next week, so bring your cash/checks and support the club :)

Summer Jobs
Now is the time... for applying to summer forestry positions that is! There are various positions available for the Cal forester. Including positions with private industry, CalFire, and USFS. If you are interested you should have a working resume. There are plenty of resources to help you create and polish your resume, including the Career Center and materials in the CNR student lounge. If you have any questions about any of these job opportunities or how to develop an appropriate forestry resume contact our friendly dean of forestry, Kevin O'Hara at kohara@berkeley.edu.

Camp at RRS
Russel Research Station is a parcel of land near Lafayette owned by the UC Center of Forestry. It is in need of a little maintenance, love, and a Forestry club party. There has been some interest in camping over night and doing some work out at RRS when the weather gets a little warmer.

Forestry Club Meeting 1/26/2011
1. Outreach
2. Club Historian
3. CalFire Job Opportunities
4. Forestry Club Centennial

Forestry Club Outreach
Carlin Starrs and Allegra Matthews tabled for boy scouts about becoming a forestry majors and/or other natural resource majors last weekend. Everything went better than expected and some of the boy scouts expressed an interest in us designing a Forestry merit badge or participate in a tree walk.

Club Historian
Rachel Friedlander was recently voted in as club historian, however she will be unable to take on the responsibilities of this position this semester. We are currently looking for another member to step up and help Wesley to compile historical information for the club. If anyone is interested in the position or would like to hear more about it please email our club president, Raphaela at rfloreanibuzbee@gmail.com.

CalFire Job Opportunities
A Cal Forestry alum, Jeff Leddy, came to speak about the Forestry Aid job opportunities for the state run forestry agency, Cal Fire. I have attached a flyer for the position. There are positions in each of the 5 state forests: Jackson(near Ft. Bragg), Mt. Home(southern Sierras), Letour(Shasta area), Boggs Mt., and Soquel(near Santa Cruz). If you have any questions about the forests or type of work entailed please email Jeff at Jeff.Leddy@fire.ca.gov. This is among many summer opportunities you have as a Cal student. There are always options from the US Forest Service, private industry, and summer research opportunities here in a Cal lab.

Forestry Club Centennial
Club officers decided unanimously that we will be holding the Forestry Club Centennial in 2012. This will entail new merchandise to commemorate the centennial and many centennial related events. If you have any good ideas for exciting events or artwork you would like to submit for the centennial gear please contact Raphaela at rfloreanibuzbee@gmail.com.

Any ideas and recommendations for forestry club are always welcome! Hope to see you at the next club meeting :)

Your Secretary,
Allegra Mautner

Hi everyone,
I'm sure Forestry Club is the last thing you want to think about in between Christmas cookies and New Year's champagne, but we have some upcoming events in 2011 that really do warrant your attention:

Forestry Club Centennial
Earlier in December we made the decision that we would celebrate the Cal Forestry Club Centennial in 2011! That doesn't leave much time to prepare in advance. This is a major event and affects not only Forestry Club, but also the Forestry Department, the College of Natural Resources, UC Berkeley and maybe even other schools of Forestry in the state. It is also an event that attracts a significant amount of attention and affects a large community of people (e.g. Cal Alumni Foresters). As such, we need to make some decisions about how we want to celebrate. Some ideas I've heard are making t-shirts and merchandise ("Centennial edition") and planning an event that students from other schools are invited to as well. This is also a really great opportunity for us to join together as a club! Please email me with your opinions and ideas and if you want to help, otherwise I don't know what I'll do.

NorCal SAF Winter Meeting: January 14-15, Redding
The theme for this year's meeting is Forestry 101: Growing California's Forestry Education and really is directly relevant to You and a great chance to represent the students of SAF! Kevin is going to be speaking on the University Panel and Carlin is going to be on the Student Panel (both on Saturday). For an overview and the full program check out the NorCal SAF Newsletter (pages 11&12) http://norcalsaf.org/temparticles/2010fall.pdf You can register by mail (in the newsletter) or online here: http://norcalsafwintermeeting2011.eventbrite.com. Registration is less expensive before January 10. On a more personal note, last year there was an excellent catered lunch.

MLK Tree Planting: Monday January 17, Lake Merritt Garden Center, Oakland Urban Re-leaf, an urban forestry non-profit organization of Oakland, hosts a couple of tree plantings throughout the year. This is a great way to get out in the community, see an area of Oakland you might not have been to before, get some experience planting trees, meet new people and be part of an urban forestry project to benefit and beautify a city that is closer to Berkeley than you may think. They might also give you hotdogs. If you are interested you should call (510) 601-9062. This is a great outreach opportunity! See attached flyer or check out their website http://www.urbanreleaf.org/index.html for some more information.

First Meeting of the Spring Semester: January 19?
The first day of school is Tuesday January 18. We could hold the first Forestry Club meeting on Wednesday January 19 unless you think that might be too hectic with school just starting. The next option would be January 26. We will be nominating officers for the spring semester, talking about the Centennial and the things in this email that haven't yet transpired.

L.E.A.D. (Leader Education And Discovery):Saturday January 22, Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill
This program is sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. Ultimately it is a series of training classes for cub scouts, boy scouts/ venturing, and adult scouters. Forestry Club will be a part of this event as an agency to supplement these training classes with information, services and/or merchandise. Would anyone like to volunteer for this? (email me!) It would entail bringing some things from campus (table, poster, flyers, merchandise) and talking to kids and adults potentially interested in forestry. The event goes from about 10-3:00 (not including set-up, etc.), depending on how many people are interested we could split the day into two shifts. This is another outstanding outreach opportunity and there's a free lunch!

Adopt-A-Highway?
Is anyone interested in adopting a highway/watershed? The idea proposed (by our Division 3 Student Representative) is that each student SAF chapter in the region do this, maybe or maybe not in conjunction with their respective local chapter.

Feel free to email me at anytime with ideas, suggestions, criticisms, comments, things I'm forgetting, hate mail / secret admirer adorations, etc. I hope that everyone can get a chance to participate in one or more of these events. All that being said-- Happy New Year! See you in 2011.
