WOOD DECAY DIAGNOSTIC TRAINING WORKSHOP
When: Thursday, 10/22/09, 1-3 PM
Where: University of California, Berkeley, Room 114 Morgan Hall
What: This is a 2-hour workshop to introduce a new test that allows for the identification of wood decay agents even in standing
trees. Here you will learn:
- History, development, and application of the assay.
- Proper collection of wood samples to be shipped to UCB for analysis.
- Tree care and management strategies using this method.
- Answers to your questions.
Background: Every year tree failures cause property damage and personal injury, exposing municipalities and local governments to significant liability. The
of California at Berkeley, in conjunction with the University of Turin, Italy, have developed a state-of-the-art assay that allows for the identification of wood decay
agents even in standing trees. This test represents the new gold standard for the identification of decay fungi, and can be used both on standing trees, in order to
prevent failures, as well as failed trees, to understand the underlying causes of the failure. Unlike other methods it identifies the unique genetic fingerprints of
disease organisms and can detect the presence of multiple invasive species in a tree.
Speakers: Dr. Matteo Garbelotto, UCCE Specialist in Forest Pathology and Mycology, from UC Berkeley and Dr. Paolo Gonthier, Professor from the University of
Turin. They are both leading researchers in their field and were instrumental in the development and implementation of the Wood Decay Diagnostic
