I am interested in using science to inform laws and policies for the protection of natural areas. Some of the most biodiverse parts of China are also the most threatened by development, and the best way to advocate for their protection may be to show that healthy ecosystems provide indispensable services to humans. I plan to research ecosystem services provided to farmers by natural forests in southern China. These services may include biological pest control, run-off filtration and provision of medicinal plants. By quantifying the value of functioning ecosystems, I hope to convince policymakers that protecting these natural areas is the only path to sustainable development.
