Karl joined the lab in April 2006 after working for David Foote at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. His doctoral work, completed in Bryan Danforth's lab at Cornell University, was an evolutionary study of the Hawaiian Hylaeus bees. Karl is currently working on several taxonomic and phylogenetic projects dealing with Drosophila and other endemic Hawaiian insects.
