Stephen L. Hurst
JD ’78Stephen L. Hurst is the Chief Business Officer of the Immune Tolerance Institute (ITI) in Menlo Park. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the biopharmaceutical industry. Prior to joining ITI, Mr. Hurst ran a successful biopharmaceutical consulting practice, recently advising the G8 governments on global health policy initiatives, serving as a biopharmaceutical industry expert for the World Bank and GAVI, and is still engaged as a senior advisor to BIO Ventures for Global Health on global health policy.
Prior to his consulting roles, he was Co-founder, President and CEO of Sequential, Inc., a development-stage oncology company, from July 2003 until December 2004. He was Executive Vice President at Inhale Therapeutic Systems, Inc. (now Nektar Therapeutics, Inc.) until July 2002, where he held several key positions, including General Counsel & Secretary, interim Senior Vice President of Operations, Vice President of Intellectual Property and Licensing and Head of Business Development. From 1987 to 1990, he was responsible for university-industry relationships as the first Campus Patent Coordinator at the University of California, San Francisco and served as legal counsel to the 1990 International AIDS Meeting.
During his undergraduate days at Cal and law school days at Golden Gate University, he held a variety of research positions at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Division of Biology and Medicine. Steve and his wife, Antonia, live in Woodside and have three children (a son and daughter in their 20s, and a teenager).
